Dr. James W. Crosby M.S., PhD. CBCC-KA CDBC is a Research Associate with the Canine Brain Project in the Department of Human Evolutionary Biology at Harvard University. He is a retired Police Lieutenant (Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office, Jacksonville, FL) and has professionally trained dogs, taught individual and group obedience classes, and addressed canine behaviour problems since 1999. Dr. Crosby first obtained his Certified Professional Dog Trainer certification in 2008 and became a Certified Behavior Consultant Canine-Knowledge Assessed in 2016. Dr. Crosby is also a Certified Dog Behavior Consultant.
His education includes earning a Master of Science degree in Veterinary Forensics and a PhD in Veterinary Medical Science, both from the College of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Florida.
Dr. Crosby is recognized in and out of court as an expert, internationally and across the US, on dangerous dogs, canine aggression, fatal dog attacks, and related issues. Dr. Crosby has assisted with on-scene, fatal human attack investigations in the US, the UK, and Australia. Dr. Crosby's work on Dog Bite Related Human Fatalities is the first that has looked at these worst-case bite incidents from a physical and behavioural perspective, including analysis of evidence and both dog and human actions and behaviours that result in human death. Dr. Crosby has provided expert consulting services regarding dangerous dog policy, dog attacks, and canine behaviour to the governments of the United States, the UK, Canada, Australia, and The Bahamas.
Dr. Crosby is an Associate Member of the American Academy of Forensic Sciences, a Charter Member of the International Veterinary Forensic Science Association, a member of the International Society of Veterinary Forensic Science, a Professional Member of IAABC, and is honored to serve on the Board of Directors of the CCPDT.
A Charter Associate Member of the International Veterinary Forensic Science Association, Jim is currently enrolled at the University of Florida in their groundbreaking Veterinary Forensics program working towards his Masters’ Degree in Veterinary Forensics. Jim is also a member of the American College of Forensic Examiners.
Jim teaches safe handling and rehabilitation of Dangerous Dogs and Investigation of Fatal and Serious Dog Attacks to police, animal control agencies, and others across the US, the UK, Italy, and Canada. Jim has been instrumental in a number of successful prosecutions focused on dog related fatalities.
Jim is currently active as a consultant on aggressive and Dangerous Dog issues, including legislative action and legal advising, civil and criminal. Jim continues to train Animal Control Officers, Police, and other investigators on procedures regarding the investigation of fatal dog attacks, participating in such investigations as an expert resource. Jim performs behavioral evaluation and retraining for difficult and aggressive dogs on an individual basis. Jim is also training police agencies on the proper use of force in canine encounters with the aim of reducing violence to both police officers and pets.
