Positive Methods for Powerful Dogs

Victoria inspired this member of the dog training community to build a force-free connection with strong, high-drive and high-aggression dogs.

I work in the dog training community and I specialize in independent, high-drive and also high-aggression breeds. At home I have Afghan hounds, a whippet and a working line FCI registered Presa Canario.

Specially within the Molosser type of breeds that can have high dog aggression, be suspicious of people and be energetic, people often rely on questionable methods. I have been told my methods are not suitable for a breed like that and that you need to "tell them who is the Boss." Despite that I continue to educate myself, to train and understand what drives these types of animals, and I base my training both for hobbies and for home in positive reinforcement, communication, and mutual understanding. I see that with breeds like this it's not only possible, but also a requirement. Nobody can handle a dog this size by force. You need to have that respect, that love, that connection. It is the only way to train a dog that has lots of "demanding qualities" to be part of modern society.

Victoria's show is one of my earliest memories of the power of positive reinforcement and it mattered a huge deal to me when I still took my first steps as a dog owner.

I believe that we all make mistakes, but we can learn from them and we should all aim to be the best possible person to our dogs.

You don't need punishment, fear, pressure or pain to control a dog, even a breed like Presa Canario. You need an open mind, a kind heart and be willing to work and learn. The prize will follow – a special, unique bond with a magnificent animal like no other.
