Like a lot of dog trainers, I got into this work because of having a dog with behaviour issues. Born in the USA, I worked in the automotive industry as a degreed engineer for many years. Living in 5 different countries and travelling extensively gave me a broad perspective to be able to relate to others across cultural and linguistic divides.
After having an aggressive dog while living in Sydney, I decided to learn more about dog training and behaviour. By the time I finished the dog trainer’s course in 2006, I had discovered my passion for helping dogs and their owners. I started training dogs full time in 2011 and do this full time.
Unfortunately, my formal dog training qualification was from an institution that advocated “balanced” methods and relied heavily on the dominance paradigm. But as I learned more about behaviour, I discovered better methods and techniques, and abandoned those outdated concepts. I believe wholeheartedly that when we know better, we do better. As a professional, I never stop learning and evolving.
I offer private one-on-one behaviour consultations in the Sydney metro area. I specialise in on-lead reactivity and aggression. Of course, I also deal with most nuisance behaviours as well, such as jumping up, excessive barking, counter surfing, etc. In every situation, I use modern, best-practice techniques that emphasise positive reinforcement and reject any use of pain, force, fear, or intimidation.
After becoming the first VSPDT in Australia in 2014, I later became a Faculty Advisor and Mentor for VSA. I am also the Treasurer for the Association of Pet Dog Trainers, Australia.
