Ask Victoria – Jessica (Somerset)

I am currently studying an Extended Diploma in Animal Management and I’m leading an investigation into whether the saying  ’You can’t teach an old dog new tricks’ is true or false. I want to look into this as I feel that there are so many older dogs in Rescue Centres because people either don’t believe they can be trained or that they are not as controllable as puppies. I was just wondering your personal opinion based on your own experiences and techniques, whether you can actually teach an old dog new tricks.

I wholeheartedly agree Victoria! Admittedly - it's not the norm - but my Lab started Search & Rescue training at 6 1/2 years old. He's no spring chicken... but he picked up the training from Day One. He's now a year into training and well on his way to becoming a certified cadaver dog.

It's never too late to start teaching your "old" dog new tricks! 🙂
