Positively Success Story: Jasper
This is the story of Jasper. Jasper is 5 year old Hound/Retriever Mix that we adopted from a local rescue group when he was 3 months old. Jasper completed Puppy, Intermediate, Advance training and his CGCC with a great positive trainer. Jasper also is a K-9 Blood Donor.
When Jasper was about 2 years old, we had taken him to work with us and while we were outside we were chased down by a neighborhood Pitbull. We ran with him dog to get inside because the dog seemed determined to get at us, After that we started to notice a slight change in his behavior around other dogs. As time went on Jasper became more dog reactive. When we would take our walks Jasper would bark and lunge at other dogs whether they barked or reacted at him. It was become more difficult to walk him and our other dog, since Jasper weighs approximately 110 pounds.
We decided that it was time to consult with our trainer, to see what we could do. At this time Jasper was 4 years old. Our trainer evaluated Jasper and determined that he was reactive. Jasper even reacted to a stuffed toy dog, We worked with Jasper using Positive Training to help him. We had 4 private lessons to help us help Jasper. We worked with Jasper daily with the help of friends. The training worked so well that we can now walk him with confidence. He rarely reacts to other dogs when we walk and if he does we know what to do, we can participate in doggy events, such as charitable 5K runs with numerous other dogs.
We will always use Positive Training because we have seen first hand how well it works. If you are willing to put in the work both you and your dog will greatly benefit. We are very grateful for our trainer and the Positive Training techniques that she uses.
The rescue of 180 Chihuahuas sparks a larger conversation on how to transition dogs from crisis situations into homes.
