Harness Houdini

Post by slmorrey »

We have been through several different harnesses and collars. I have settled on knowing I need a to use a martingale collar as it is the only one she can't back out of. Harnesses .... we are working our way through no pull harnesses. We have this one right now but she can get out of it http://www.petco.com/product/102822/Pet ... rness.aspx. We look pretty silly because I have to hook the leash to her collar and the harness. I don't want to do that anymore.

We are working through issues right now and only have problems when she sees another dog. (different post on different thread)

Anyways this is the one I think I like (other than I can't find it in pink) http://www.amazon.com/Guardian-Gear-Sof ... B00BJAELNW

Looking for opinions on what you think about this style

For dogs who back out, you really need a harness with a strap that goes between the front legs as well I think. The Perfect Fit harness is really really good (a firm favourite on this board, and the company is great also) http://dog-games-shop.co.uk/perfect-fit ... og-harness
The Mekuti Balance harness is also really good http://www.mekuti.co.uk/harness_shop.htm

The one you linked to I think she'll be able to get out of just as easily as the one you already have I'm afraid..

Hope this helps ;)

One lead on the harness and one on the collar, or a double-ended lead fixed to both, is the way. Don't fret about if you look or don't look silly. This is about your dog training, not your image  and is a works in progress. Use the right tools and the job gets done.

Harnesses with a second belly strap, such as a Ruffwear Webmaster, are near-impossible for a dog to get out of without chewing through a strap. I don't know of any front-clips like that though :/ The Perfect Fit is great. If you're in the US and have trouble getting ahold of the Perfect Fit, you may consider the Ruffwear FrontRange. I would NOT recommend it if your dog does the "head down and PULL" thing, as it tends to sit high on the chest, but if your dog keeps their head up most of the time it's a good option. Otherwise, I also like a standard roman harness, available at any pet store, and just clipping the leash to the ring on the chest. It's not meant for that, but it works if your dog isn't constantly pulling.

Thank you guys!

I am in the US, I checked out ruffwear and now I am stuck on thedogoutdoors.com and can't get off....I'm in love. She has put her head down to put her all into it to pull, but I still think the Ruffwear Front range would still be ok (checking many, many videos) plus she hasn't been doing it for awhile. I do however like the web master harness they have, just wish it had the same option as the front range wear where you can choose to clip the leash to the front or back or both.

Thedogoutdoors.com site alone is just so amazing...I need to go hiking now! I will be hiking again this year to really work through some injuries I've had, they're not stopping me this year!
