Learn dog training with Jean Donaldson!

Post by Noobs »

Jean Donaldson is offering what appears to be an online course at her training academy. How wonderful! Here's a link for anyone interested:

http://www.academyfordogtrainers.com

I happened upon it because I geeked out on facebook and started following dog trainers, and the link was posted by Nicole Wilde, a Positively blogger.

If anyone decides to take it, do report about it here. I am so curious about the course.

(I just saw the cost of the course. I'm sure well worth it!)

There is also a list of graduates so a good referral for anyone who needs in-home help.

so this is what she has been up to since ending the classes at the San Francisco SPCA.

so I am thinking...cost..can't be that bad right....

However, it's very reasonable IF you are looking to do dog training as a career. not much more expensive than putting your self through a couple semesters of collage or other trade type schools. taking it just to take it....bit steep.

however, note the book list... lost of inexpensive learning opportunities there.

Im saving up as we speak - I have about £1.23. It'll be a while! (Unless any mystery benefactors out there fancy sponsoring me? ... snort. Oh well!)

However after the initial EEK, yes its a VERY reasonable price for what you get and I can think of college courses that cost more and would be less comprehensive!

Back to saving up then, and as you so wisely point out Jacksdad - nothing to stop anyone buying the books on the booklist!

I follow Nicole Wilde on Facebook and Twitter, too, Noobs! :D

I've also found this you can check at your convenience: http://www.petdogtrainer.com/dvd.html, which is a DVD that Laura Bourhenne produced together. (I happen to follow petdogtrainer on Twitter too! :D )

I wish I was 30 years younger I would beg, borrow or steal the money to get it, well maybe not steal.

I so can't afford that now... I also am more for being a volunteer trainer or a "hobbyist" trainer than it being my profession. (I am just about to graduate with a degree NOT in dog training so I'd like to use that for a good long while before going a different direction, lol)

I like the extra resources...

You should also check out Patricia McConnell (facebook only, or her blog at http://www.theotherendoftheleash.com). She's the #1 blog I read. Her book "The Other End of the Leash" was the first one I bought and it changed my life.

The price looks to be about the same as the other online dog-training schools I've seen, and is loads cheaper than any college I've seen. :|

Well while this has been bumped up...I've pretty much settled on this school as the one I want to attend. :O It looks like the most well-rounded - deals with both routine "tricks" and with behavior problems - and the website design is nice and clear as well, which I hope holds true for the course itself. ;) So I'll be reporting back about how it goes, hopefully! :)

I would be very interested in your impression. I am also considering Jean's school. It's just a matter of money and time.

I would be interested in your thoughts as well! I'm considering taking the course, I just have to save up the money.

I know I am writing this LONG after the topic was posted (so sorry!) but I was just wondering... Does The Academy for Dog Trainers teach just positive methods or specifically clicker training? Thank you, and it's fine if no one replies... I know this is really long after everyone else posted here!!

Jean absolutely teaches "positive" methods. as in no pain, fear or force. If you like and agree with Victoria, you will be absolutely at home with Jean.

check out some of her blog posts http://academyfordogtrainers.com/blog/2 ... generator/
and read her book culture clash http://www.amazon.com/Culture-Clash-Jea ... ture+clash

if you want to get a feel for who she is, how she teaches, what she believes.

I don't know how into "clicker training" she goes in her school, but I would be SHOCKED if she doesn't cover the science behind clicker training very thoroughly given one of the books that she recommends reading and is part of the "stuff" you get once you sign up is http://www.amazon.com/Excel-Erated-Lear ... d+learning which is all about the science behind "clicker training".

"clicker training" as a label is a bit misleading. It implies the "click" is the "magic". the real magic is the HUGE amount of "stuff" behind the click. while I haven't attended Jean's School, I am pretty sure you will be learning a whole lot about the "stuff behind the click" in her school if you attend.

Thank you! I was quite tired the first time I was going through the website, but now that I reread it I did notice it does include a mention of the clicker in the Course Overview Section.
