Female JR - which breed to put with her?

Post by Amazing-Grace »

We have an 18mth old JR ***** and would love another dog. From info I have read here I need a male, different breed & different age. We don't necessarily want a puppy but we're not averse to one either. So maybe an older, rescue dog. I would love some suggestions please.
If we go with a pup I love Bassetts, is that a good pairing?
Thank you so much for any ideas

Do think about the qualities you want in a dog - Bassetts are very houndy hounds, they may be short but they are a BIG dog so dont let their height fool you.

They are never going to be great off lead dogs, though they can be trained, they will always want to follow a scent and if that is an issue for you, it could be a biggy.

They are also rather stubborn independant dogs, most hound breeds are, you really have to work hard to show them hwat YOU are offering is better than anything else, show them why they should do as you ask.

They also dont cope well being left alone.

If you do think a bassett is for you, there are breed rescues you can have a chat with, who will want to match you with a dog that suits your lifestyle.

I have a common mix , male JR - aged 2yrs and a female black labrador -3yrs . They would well togther ..

JR have lots of energy , they are very busy little dogs .. You need to think about that when you get the next dog ..

Can I ask why you want to breed from your JRT? It can be dangerous to put a big dog to a small *****, often the pups are too big for her.

Rescues both in the UK and the USA are full of terriers and their crosses, can you garentee that these pups will never end up in rescue?

Mattie - you misunderstand me, I just want a 2nd dog, I do not want to breed.
My JRT has been spayed.

Thank you for your input Emmabeth & Fab Lab, I'm going to think for a long time and do lots of research before I make any decisions.

Sorry, I read it as if you were going to breed from your JRT :(

JRTs and Lurchers go well together, they seem to compliment each other

They can also get into a LOT of mischief together - unless OP is willing to put in lots and lots of training :D

It isn't my Lurcher or Whirrier that gets into mischief, it is my Terrier that do that and she is about 15 or 16 years young
