8 2eek old puppy

Post by Scadds »

Hi

What should I expect from an 8 week old puppy (Fell Terrier called Charlie).

We are a "calm" household - 2 adults - sensible people...

He loves peoples feet/shoes and the bottom of my jeans/trousers.
He does wee outside but has twice gone in his crate (once when the door was open and I am sure he was asleep)
We do use treats and absolutely praise good behaviour (especially when when he wees/poos in the garden).
He goes nuts (sometimes) in the garden and has just discovered digging (we are not precious about our garden).

When do you start training?
Come commands
Sit commands
Drop commands

and (last one) when he learns the above will earn a treat how do you then get them to still come/drop/sit without bribing him with a treat?

Thanks everyone!

Hi and welcome to the forum

You can start training straight away! The others will come to help you on ideas but if you head over to the training articles section, you will see articles on clicker training which is a wonderful way to teach pups new things.

For example, on your recall question, you don't need a treat to bribe him to come. You call him, choose a word you want, and when he comes to you, you click and then produce the treat immediately. With the drop command, if he has something in his mouth, you don't pull at it (as that is game to him) so instead you'd wait for him to drop it, then click immediately he does that, then treat. Then you introduce the word as he is doing the action you want.

Hi and welcome to the forum!

There's a difference between bribing and "luring." After a few repetitions try with your hand not holding a treat (for sit and down), and if he complies then produce a treat from your pocket to reward.

For come, have a party, cheer, lots of praise, maybe a treat. You may be able to start this method a little bit tweaked since your pup is young still. viewtopic.php?f=20&t=7155

Enjoy your pup!
