Re: Prong collar
Reading many of your posts you already knew the concept.....just didn't quite have a name for it.......Ahhh so thats what its called
Re: Prong collar
I take the view that if I don't understand something then people new to dog training and behaviour will feel well out of their depth and go away without getting the help they need so I ask.
When I was training to be a riding instructor one of the ladies who were teaching us kept saying, "Inside leg to outside hand", this confused everyone of us so we asked, she couldn't tell us what it meant, it had been said to her so she was just repeating it. As I got better and understood more I was able to work it out but this really brought home to me that many people don't understand what is being said and are loosing out because of it.
Another instructor used to say, if someone hasn't got something after you have told them 3 times they will never get it, it is up to you as teachers, which means us on here as well, to change the wording so that they do understand and keep changing the words.
We do need to be careful on how we wright and take into account that most people on here don't know the technical words and is the main reason I don't attempt to know what they mean. If I get the chance to study dog behaviour which I would love to do, I will then learn the technical terms, in the meantime I will keep asking.

Re: Prong collar
I have a psychology a level and was reqiured to learn the 4 quadrants of operant conditioning. I still get confused on them though, especially when people start with the P+ etc abbreviations. I tend not to use the technical terms either, I figure if I struggle with them after doing psychology and after years of reading about dog behaviour and training then someone who hasn't done that is going to struggle even more.
I think I struggled so much with Control Unleashed because it does use the terminology and I had to really think about it to get my head around it. Excellent book but not the easiest of reads.

A good human analogy...... eating your greens so you can have pudding. Doing the washing up so you can go out to play.
Does that help Mattie?

Re: Prong collar
You are are the first person who has been able to put this in something people can understand Emmabeth, all you ever get is repeated what others have said. When this happens I suspect they don't understand it themselves this went on a lot when I was training with horses. Me being me I wanted to know what was meant, it was rare I got the answer, it was just repeated what was told to them.

Re: Prong collar
As in Poland we are still fighting with traditional methods and prong collar lovers, I would like to know if any of you have any data on prong collar damage, or the feeling the dog gets.
I discuss with some people who don't want to train their big dogs as they have their prong collar and they are happy about it. Their main argument is always "it doesn't hurt the dog" and when I tell them that it is constructed this way to hurt, and if it didn't it would be called just "collar". But unfortunatelly it is not argument for them. Therefore I am wondering is there any publication on phisical (not the training) aspects of wearing prong collar?
