Often people ask about different pet foods, adverts are glittery and the vets are paid to reccommend certain foods, but which are really any good?

Re: Major UK Pet Food Brands - Who owns which
Interesting stuff. See, but I perosnally would not feed my pets any of those brands, especially when there are far beter holistic products out there that a comparable in price to those listed. Especially the Hill's. i know I converted our neighbor who trusted their vet 110% and was sold on Hills, that is until I came along They were paying $84.00 US for a 35lb bag of junk basically. Now they are switched to Innova which is far better and even a little less money and their dogs (3 of them) have shown vast improvement... healthy coats, trimmed down to a healthy weight, even their "aggressive" guy Spikey has gotten a new attitude, with training of course. They are so much better, and I'm a firm believer that the food has alot to do with it along with training.
So I would like to see what holistic foods they have. I'm sure they have Taste of the wild, Natural Balance, EVO, Innova, Halo's Spot and some dehydrated......yes?

Thanks, intersting reading, it doesn't show the dog food I feed mine though, Merlin and Joe are on Burgess Sensitive and the others on Wonderdog.
Monib, most of those foods you mention are not sold in the UK.

Re: Major UK Pet Food Brands - Who owns which
Mattie, have you noticed that the Sensitive has reduced in size to 12kg for the same price we paid for the 15kg bag ... do they think we may not notice?????
Re: Major UK Pet Food Brands - Who owns which
It should be slightly cheaper since the size has reduced, I wrote a very strong email to Burgess about it and had the Managing Director phone me, he said that burgess is the only dog food manufacturer who puts only UK meat in their food, all the others import the meat which is a lot cheaper, don't know if this is true or not. It is this jump that I have taken 3 of my dogs off the Sensitive and are now on Wonderdog instead. I haven't noticed any change in the dogs, they seem to be doing just as well and this is £8.50 for 15Kg I am paying £23 for 12.5Kg of Sensitive. I can't take Joe off Sensitive and Merlin will eventually be off it as he has kidney failure.

Re: Major UK Pet Food Brands - Who owns which
this is the problem when vets recommend things like hills and science plan that are actually rubbish! it does say about burns and arden grange towards the bottom, these are the ones that i feed and im v happy with it, although i was looking at orijen earlier but it works out at over double what we pay now, it doesnt really seem worth it.

Re: Major UK Pet Food Brands - Who owns which
Did anyone hear anything about BETA dog food? We get the chicken and rice flavoured kibble for Ben and mix it with a little wet food as he would rather starve than eat the dry kibble. We use the Pedigree chunks in gravy. Ive heard Pedigree is not actually very good but unsure as to how true this is? Does anyone have any other suggestions on a good nutritous wet food?
Re: Major UK Pet Food Brands - Who owns which
Pedigree......... blech. Look on the back of the tin. 4% meat. What the heck is the rest?
Look for maximum meat, minimum anything else and watch out for the trick of labelling meat as the single largest ingredient...... because the cereals are broken down into individual types of cereal and as such are not the single largest ingredient, but when you add all the types of cereal together, its still more cereal than meat.
If you are feeding wet food and dont give any recreational bones or the occasional raw chicken wing - do clean your dogs teeth with a doggy toothbrush, toothpaste and some sort of enzymatic plaque destroying spray.... or you will be takign your dog in for an GA and his teeth scraped, cleaned and even pulled probably before he is 4 years old (shockingly, I have seen TWO year old dogs who need their teeth doing under GA after being fed wet foods and not having anthing to clean their teeth with).

Don't forget that 'wet' food also has a moisture content - it's usually around 70 - 80%. That's water  So essentially wet food is 80% water, 4% meat and the rest *dunno* Sweepings off the floor?
Also, Bakers - if any of you live on farms or where there is livestock that ends up in the human food chain, you MUST keep the bags of Bakers well away from livestock feedstuffs/livestock - it even says it on the bag, what does that say about it?!
Also watch the companies that just list 'cereals' in the ingredients - this is so they can change the recipe to whatever they can buy in cheapest at the time and not have to change the bag listings.
Dog food is a complete minefield!

Re: Major UK Pet Food Brands - Who owns which
I feed my dogs a mixture of Arden Grange and Naturediet. They do eat raw but not fully.
I've tried this, that and everything in between! Before discovering the world of nutrition I - like a lof of dog owners was taken in my fancy adverts and brightly coloured packaging and boy did I regret it! My normally sweet, docile, non barking GSD (I know right?) turned into a hyperactive monster who chewed shoes, walls, sofas and pooped out brown water. UGH!!!
