I've seen this canine specialist lawyer recommended on another forum: https://www.doglaw.co.uk/ownership-custody-disputes/ They do a one-off fixed price telephone consultation for only £36 for up to 20 minutes. But chances are you've done a lot of research already and might have a pretty good idea of your rights (it does look to be a grey area). Good luck.

Thanks, we have looked at those. Currently we are in communication with Wheldon Law who do a lot specifically on dog law. Just a sad situation that didn't have to happen.

If his microchip details are in your name that is proof of ownership i know this as my sister is currently living with me due to her partner leaving her and taking there dog. Like you she was financial supported by him as she is a stay at home mom little Theo is 1yr next month so has not been able to work as they could not afford childcare.

She phoned the police to say he had stole her dog as the dog is in her name on the microchip , KC documents and the contract of sale is in her name. So if you have any KC documents that can prove hes your dog and that you and not your ex are merlins owner then that should be enough. The police have told him that he will be arrested for theft he he does not return the dog. I know have a giant Leonberger living with us. Also as i said microchip is also proof of ownership. Remember when dogs get stolen or lost thats why we microchip as that tells you who the owner is.

I really hope this has a happy ending and merlin is back with you as you did so much hard work training him and he made such good progress. Its just not fair when you have already been through so much. Just remember were all here for you if you ever need us.

Sorry to contradict, but in UK the microchip is not proof of ownership. The person to whom the chip is registered owns the microchip but not the dog it is in. Bizarre and stupid, but that's how it stands now.

However, a bill of sale and breed registration documents go a long way towards proving ownership, as do veterinary and insurance paperwork. Good luck, Lotsa, hope it works out for you.

I have an awesome dog :D

We had a wander round a churchyard this afternoon, and Jasper decided to lie down and chill for a bit, which was just fine by me. Then a big black cat wandered across the garden and sat down to look at us....

I'm still incapacitated with my dodgy knee, so getting up from the ground/floor is... interesting. I really didn't fancy struggling to get up, which might trigger him to lunge at the cat, as I can only hold him if I have a very secure footing if he kicks off. But if the cat stayed there much longer, J's brain cells were going to spontaneously combust. Luckily, I was armed with liver pate, and smelling that, J decided to pay attention to me saying 'Not for you' (a phrase that sort of evolved and he understands). The cat wandered off (phew!) and with liver cake held under his nose, I managed to get up (think Twister) and lead him away. He really showed awesome self-control, so got every bit of liver pate I had :D

It must have been the KC documents and the Contract of sale being in her name and not her ex why my sister got her dog back.

Im so happy that lara is fine with Kiara ( my sisters leo) both being females i was concerned but there both well trained and both are great with other dogs and both are spayed.

I was on babysitting duties today which was interesting i have never looked after him on my own. And lara gave me a few weird looks. I think she knew i had no clue what i was doing but all thankfully was fine.

Kiara never leaves little Theodores side she oftern lies next to him and she even plays with him dropping toys in front of him shes so gentle with him and whenever he ccries she comes at gets one of us straight away. Lara on the other hand stays well away from Theo shes not so sure so since i can see shes not so sure i keep her in my other living room away from theo. Id rather be safe than sorry. I know she would never hurt him but you just never know , lara is not allowed near him without me being there .

That's very sensible, ZaraD.

JudyN, that Jasper is awesome, and haven't you both got a lovely relationship. He really tried for you - and liver pate made a great reward.

You know what they say - when he's good he's very very good, but when he's bad... he's HORRID!!

Enjoyed my day with Lara today , we went to trentham gardens and enjoyed a lovley picnic. We were both sad to leave.

I wonder how Lotsofquestions got on and hope she can fight to get merlin back. I have prayed for her and merlin to be reunited.

today we said goodbye to Sky. I had a longer post, but was then told that I have to log in to post and I don't feel like typing it all over again.
Grammy to Sky and Sirius, who came to live with me, stole my heart, and changed my life forever as I took over their care and learned how to be a dog owner.

Great big hugs and much empathy. You were the best owner for her.

Very sorry to hear.
We have a brilliant collection of stories here about both of them, and their adventures.

It's been years so I can't remember who first introduced me to it, but I'm pretty sure the Voice of Doom saved Delta from a mauling at the very least today. A neighbor has a great Dane who hates Delta and today they were in the parking lot, chatting behind a car so I didn't see the dog, with the dog on a collar instead of a front-clip, and that didn't let her hold the dog back properly. I gave her a chance to get the dog under control, but when it was clear she couldn't I took a deep breath and BELLOWED at the dog. He paused long enough for me to drag Delta to my car (ten feet away, thank GOD) and literally wrestle him in there, because at that point Delta decided enough was enough, and after 8 months of threats from afar he wouldn't tolerate any threats any more. Hopefully this reminds her to use their harness and maybe inspires her to get some training. If I can write one that doesn't sound super passive-aggressive, I might write a note telling her that I've been there, apologize for yelling at the dog, that I don't blame her or the dog, and say that if she wants to know how I worked through dog reactivity with Opal I could send her more info.

Anyways, thanks for everyone who talked about VoD because when it was clear I needed to get the dane to back off I knew just what to do.
