Trancing

Post by JudyN »

I came across a behaviour called 'trancing' or 'ghosting' today where a dog slowly walks under a curtain, shrub, or so on so it brushes along his back, and is seemingly in a trance. There's a discussion and video here: http://greytadventure.blogspot.co.uk/20 ... e-dog.html with a link to a further video.

Some breeds are apparently more susceptible than others.

Has anyone seen this in their dog? Although others on the lurcher forum where I read about it find it quite beautiful, I find it a little creepy - it's as if the dog is possessed  I'd love to know what the reason is behind it and what the dog is experiencing.

It's something I'd like to know more about too. One of my dogs would very occasionally stand under the lowest branches of a broom bush and tickle himself with the leaves, but he was definitely not in a trance as he'd grin at me while he was doing it.

I see this all the time, every day, exactly like in the video... and i also don't think the boy is in any kind of trance, just likes standing there for a few moments

It's skin irritation of some kind, the bandage is to prevent him from licking it

My Max the GH does something similar occasionally but only for a moment.

The videos look like a displacement behaviour, but I'd like to learn more. :)
