my 4 yo male jack russel is a puller! He didn't get walked much, because he wasn't a joy to walk - he pulled, and ran on 2 legs, and when I first met him I had no idea about teaching a dog how to walk!
We bought him a Lupi harness, and VOILA he is now much more enjoyable to walk! We use an "ezi dog" lead - with a comfortable grip handle, and a stretchy lead, and gone are the days when he would leap and bound ahead, now he happily trots along with his Lupi in place. For those who don't know what a lupi is, it's basically a string harness, and stops him pulling. A God send! We tried a halti, and at the time I think we weren't patient enough to put up with him trying to scratch it off - but the Lupi worked immediately.
I just bought my little 1 yo pom x jack russel for her birthday, a little pink and white checkerred material harness from one of those designer dog shops - and it is just perfect for her too! She's tiny (only 4.5 kilos), and I couldn't get a Lupi in XS, but this little harness fits her snugly and she loves to walk in it. She didn't really pull, but I didn't want to risk damaging her tiny windpipe and throat while she tried to catch up to big brother Ted!
I only bought her the harness 2 days ago, and every walk we've taken since, I have said "what a joy it is to walk you now!"

Hi! I am from Australia and we have just started the "It's me or the dog" series 1. I think it's amazing how well Victoria works with the dogs' and the Lupi sounds really great for us! (we have 2 large dogs, one purebreed German Shepherd, and another GS cross - maybe cross Rotty? noone is sure). I first saw them in one of the first episodes where there where 2 labs, one was on a halti and the other on this Lupi.
Having never heard of them before I was intrigued especially because our bigger dog (the GSx) is a real puller and because of his size we can't seem to get the halti to work (I think he would be an inbetween size or something:-s)
If anyone knows where I could look at this in Australia or where I could find information about measurements for this or the effectiveness that would be great!

hi Tania, I'm in Australia too, and I picked up my lupi from our local vet! I also have seen it in pet supplies stores, and in our local designer dog shop/groomer/salon
http://www.companyofanimals.co.uk/lupi.php - there is a size guide on there, the German Shepherd and Rottys are Large size. BUT I'd take your dogs in with you, and try it on in the store - most places are good like that. You can test it out in the store too, have a little walk and see how it goes.
I have read a review about the lupi being bad because it is cord style, instead of flat material, and that it can rub on the front of the dog's chest and cause rope burn - however my little jack russel walks with his lupi twice a day for 30-45 minutes each time, and he's a boisterous little fella and the lupi is tight against his chest, and it doesn't appear to cause him ANY distress, and there is no sign of rubbing, burning, or pain. I am interested to hear others opinions though?

One of the things I love about the lupi is the fact that it's so light weight and no material, so he is able to keep cool when walking (his old harness caused him to sweat and wasn't suitable for warmer weather walks)

Thanks for that! I'll check it out. I hadn't heard of the Lupi's before but they seem to range from 22$ up to 35$ here (or thats the prices I found for Australian online pet supplies!
I'm also wondering if the RSPCA superstores would have them?
hmm. They did look flat on tv. That episode last night was brilliant!! I couldn't believe how quickly Veronica is able to work with them and when she (appeared) to use another Lupi I decided we have to get one (or at least find more out about them!)

I've looked at what other people have been saying online and it seems that a head halter is no good for my dog (someone could have said so 3 years ago!

My dog loves his food (and treats) but wont take them while walking (on the halti anyways) so I don't think thats going to work either. Hence I decided on the Lupin! I have a lupi and i swear by it, I had tried Halti harnesses, head collars and all sorts but none of them worked, or if they worked my dog would spend all his time trying to get the harness off.
We tried the Lupi on recommendation from a friend and what a difference its made, no more pulling at all

A local "trainer" claimed to be helping with the design of the Lupi some years ago.
He proudly demonstrated how it would hurt the dog to pull with obvious enjoyment.
I shouldn't be surprised as choke chains, prong collars, shock collars are all part of his armoury.
And he claims to use positive methods.
I despair.
my dog pretty much puts his lupi on himself..... he gets all excited, grabs it and puts his head throgh it - then when I take it off him he sits still and puts his head in it, and lifts his legs on his own to put them through the loops.
I've heard that they hurt, and that they rub, but my dog shows no signs of distress, no physical signs of damage.

Someone I know used a Lupi a while back, and it rubbed the skin horrificly over time. There are loads of good and IMO much safer alternatives. Head halters work very well on shorter leads (should never be used on extending leads or long lines), and the two best body harnesses we've used to date were the Walkezee by itself, or the plain Canac walking harness coupled with a head halter.
We now use a head halter and the Canac together as it gives us "power steering" over Dharma, who is a strong Bullmastiff.
If you don't want to use a head halter too, then the Walkezee is a better solution as it works in a similar way to a head halter.
When choosing a "normal" body harness, it's best to pick one that sits further forward on the dog (like the Canac) as the trail style harnesses that have the strip down the back and the band round the waist harness a dog's pulling power and make pulling worse. The difference with the Canac is that it sits much further forward and therefore it's easier to gain control of the forequaters of the dog. The Walkeee is completely different to other body harnesses in that the lead attaches to the chest strap, giving very good control over the dog (and if it works for a 45kg Bullmastiff, it'll work for owt!).
IMO they shouldn't sell Lupis or the other harnesses that use strings under the "armpits" as they're cruel and dangerous.
