Susan Garrett's Recallers

Post by ClareMarsh »

A couple of days ago I signed up for Susan Garrett's Recallers. For anyone who doesn't know anything about It's a distance learning course, with an on-line community, a few live group web sessions with Susan and daily training plans for short burst training. It's an 8 week course but the material and forums etc stay open for 6 months so you don't have to get it all done at once, but I imagine the momentum is better in the 8 week period.

I have seen so many positive reviews on it and Ted's recall goes up and down in terms of response time, I've had a few goes at sharpening it up but I (not Ted) always lose momentum so I've been wanting to find something to help.

Recallers is only open for registration every once in a while (this is the 5th one) and I promised myself if it opened again I'd join. It cost just under £250 (how much it costs depends a little on exchange rate) but we've not done an agility in a while and I didn't even bother with a puppy class for Ella so I'm due some spending on dog training I think :D

I knew already it was about a lot more than just recall (people sign up for all sorts of reasons, there's lots of fearful dogs that seem to have benefited for eg) and I watched the free web session that Susan and Linda did to "sell" the course, and I learnt a decent amount just from that, and it gave me some stuff to think about. It also gave me a much better insight into how Susan works and that it's not all running around with border collies  which gave me the final push I needed to sign up.

I'm not sure how much longer it's open if anyone is interested. Most of the material is obviously heavily copyrighted but she does link to her blog and to youtube etc so if there's anything that comes up that I think is interesting that I can share I will :D

I think it's open til the end of the week. I'm so bummed, I was gonna sign up as well but both our cars broke down within the space of one month so I just can't afford it right now :(

It looks great for improving focus and attention in general and making yourself really really fun and valuable to your dog, which I'm really struggling to achieve with Precious unless in very specific circumstances; and I feel kinda stuck.. And his recall is not very good at all (he doesn't run away and he will come back- but only when he's good and ready  .

Also I like the idea of a structured training plan, I tend to get a bit lazy or just not do as much as I should because I'm not sure how to best progress with his training; so having a plan to follow and working more intensively during the period of the course would help push me I think. Oh well, hopefully next time.

I look forward to reading your updates and hearing your thoughts on the course :)

You can pay in instalments if that helps you at all :(

What you describe is exactly why I've signed up, I need a structure round me to keep me motivated, it's never the dog is it

If memory serves me correctly she used to have terriers so knows how to work other less bidable breeds. Sounds really cool Clare looking forward to hearing how you get on :D

She does have terriers, yep and she was working with a poodle on the webcast, and talked about lots of other breeds.

By the way I'm SORRY for typing f**e on-**ne because it seems to have caused a new wave of blummin' spam

Interested to hear how you find it Clare!
Recall is a real problem for my gang but can't justify that kind of money sadly!

I'll be updating on this thread for sure. It is a lot of money but I've got 2 weeks to cancel if I don't think it's for me (Day one is tomorrow) and there are a LOT of people on there that are on their multiple go through which suggests to me that it must be good, although you could also argue that it's so cr@p they have to come back again and again
