Running alongside a bike

Post by JudyN »

OH is considering cycling up a nearby trailway with Jasper running alongside. He's not even sure yet whether he can easily walk Jasper to the point where he can be let off lead while pushing the bike, so I'll be going along on foot for the first trial run.

At the moment, Jasper completely ignores bikes. My question is, if he enjoys running alongside OH on his bike, will he be likely to start running alongside other bikes, which could be annoying and possibly dangerous for the riders?

I can only give my experience on this, which is this:

A year ago my OH had a 2 week stint of bike riding, and took Scout with him a few times. To this day, she stops and watches every approaching bike in case it's bringing her Daddy to for her. She showed no interest in them before. Now with Scout this generally just means doing the super-excited puppy-like sit-and-waggle... but I think, as in all things, you have to think WWJD (what would Jasper do?)

My query would be, if your OH can keep up with Jasper is it too late for him to enter the Olympics?

No worries Clare - Jasper usually adjusts his speed to that of any dog chasing him, so hopefully will do the same with the bike. This has led the occasional owner of a small fat dog to comment with pride on how their dog can keep up with mine

Oh Lor' I get this too!

and I have at various times been told that someone's labrador and someone else's staffordshire are each faster than a greyhound  they have NO IDEA how fast this type of dog can go....... :!:

Bendog ran with whippets when he was younger, poor lad going full pelt made himself sick trying to keep up with them playing. And then got concussion clashing heads with one :/

I've walked pop with my (evil) step mums (fat) whippet/jrt cross and she wasnt far off, but then hes not much bigger and out of shape. She had a lovely play with a greyhound once but I'm under no illusion about that one! he was cruising at a light jog whilst pop was flat out trying to catch him.

Terriers have cracking stamina, but can't win on speed when a sight hound really switches on!

They sure do.. Ari and I once met two guys on mounaint bicycles in the nature park, and a border terrier running behind them... And about 40 min later we met the same exact two guys, still on their mountain bicycles, and the border terrier still running behind them.. I thought that was crazy..

Honey loves to run with us on bikes and yes she does check bikes to see if she should run with them, most of the time she'll realise that we're not on them but if she's already super excited she might have a run after one. I don't walk her off lead that much so it's not too big a problem but it is something I have to watch out for.

Horus runs alongside my bike on an attachment - not offlead because it isn't suitable where we live. But he has never shown any interest in other bikes, and still doesn't. Surprising really, even when they whizz up behind him he never reacts - about the only thing he has never bothered about!!
