Snow and first walk

Post by kez28 »

Following all of his jabs today is the first day Lennon should be able to go for a walk but we've woken up to lots of snow (in north east england). I let him out into the back garden this morning to go potty and his legs completely disappeared in the snow  he very quickly shot back into the house.

He's 4 and 1/2 months old now and definately needs to get out and start exploring the world. The snow doesn't seem to be as deepout on the street but should i wait until the snow disappears or will it be ok to take him out? If I do take him out how long should i walk him for and should i get him a little coat? don't want him to freeze

sorry for all the questions just don't want his first walk experience to frighten him.

Have a play in the snow with him - make it fun. Don't worry about his legs disappearing. If you have fun, he will have fun. What sort of a dog is he? I did buy my short haired collie a sporty number - the Ruffwear close fitting jacket but he only wears if it is absolutely freezing and we are out walking, where we were also stopping a lot but he's very active so runs around a lot and this keeps nhim warm. You should definately take him out - don't let the snow be a reason to not socialise him and get his used to different things. It's nothing to worry about. I can't remember about the time you should be out walking at that age... was so long ago I did it. Someone else will be on here to advise on that, I'm sure.

Seen your first post - a jack russell cross. If you see him shivering, you could buy him a coat but if he's not shivering, don't bother. Keeping him moving will keep him warm. If you can't get out, take him to friends' houses with adult dogs to socialise with or join your local training club. All good stuff to do in the winter months.

Thanks for replying, don't know what i was worrying about after he'd got used to the snow he absolutely loved it! he kept burying his head and jumping into big piles of snow :) I let him out into the garden and he loved chasing the snow flakes
