Ticks & weather
What's the deal with ticks? I thought after frost and days of freeze, we'd be free of them for awhile. Yet despite sub-freezing temps, suddenly, I've found ticks on my dog. Could they have been dormant or something in my house? Thanks.

Okay, I asked the question for a google query, and found a link to the site of Drs. Foster and Smith. They mentioned in their FAQ that in warmer climates, it is recommended to use tick control year-round. This would lead me to believe that they could safely harbor inside your home, where it is warmer, and feed on your dogs and you. I also found elsewhere that there are multiple species of ticks, and some have a short life cylce of only a few months, while some have a long life cycle of up to four years!
Re: Ticks & weather
I HATE TICS! more than I hate fleas. I have a house in an area where fleas are problem and another house where tics are a problem. Can't win, I use a flea and tic topical year round. At my home where there are fleas I use an organic prep called, and excuse the spelling, diatmasious earth. You can get it at a feed and grain store or at a swiming pool supply house as it is used in pool filters. I do this in the early spring and late summer. We also have squirells in that are stupid enough to come in the year and rabbits at the other house, they all carry fleas and tics. I spred it on the lawns and all area's of my yard paying real attention to the area around the foundation of my house where it is dry and sheltered. No help in the area where the tic's are a problem because we are in the country and the dogs can roam freely, I use the topical. With fleas and tics not only do they get on the dog, they can come in the house on you. I use the diatmasious earth in the house as well, it grinds the critters up and is not chemicle. I can use it on anything. It is a bit spendy but worth it to me. My grandchildren come to my home and I don't want chemicle on them.
The best days are spent with my dogs.

The diatom. earth is excellent. We use it all the time, and you can even rub it into the dogs' coats and then brush it out.

I live in South Africa, which has a hot climate. We use flea & tick control all year round. We got the best results by using "Frontline": http://frontline.us.merial.com/
