Dogs don't do well on carbs - hence why pelleted dog food has to be cooked and extruded. You will do much better to increase fatty meat eg lamb IF it doesn't upset him, but most importantly, take your time and be patient. A little underweight does not harm a dog.

Is he better from having been ill or does he have a condition that affects his food absorption?
A dog is never bad or naughty - it is simply being a dog
