Feeding on walks?

Post by Sarah83 »

I take Spencers meals out with us in a tub and he gets a mouthful for every recall. On an hour and a half to 2 hour walk he might get a third or half of his daily ration throughout the walk and the rest he gets on his toilet walks for recalling. It's working wonders for the recall problem we were having but I'm just wondering whether there's any risk to me feeding him this way. He's raw fed if that makes any difference (and believe me, I've had some weird looks spoon feeding my dog disgusting looking stuff out of a tub!)

Not easy I know, but could you make the rewards smaller? It's the fact of the reward existing that makes it rewarding, not the amount.

I'm trying to make them as small as I can, I say he gets a mouthful but it's more like a medicine spoon full. It's what they call mince but it's not nice, neat mince like you get to make cottage pie with lol, it's horrible mushy stuff. It's not so bad the days I'm giving him chicken or liver or heart as I can cut that into tiny pieces but there's no way to cut this stuff properly.

Can you put it in squeezy tubes?

I don't think a squeeze tube would work Clare, I think the stuff is too thick and solid and it has lumps in it too :?

This is the tripe, the beef, kidney and liver are around the same consistency though. (not sure what's going on with the colour in the pic)

I'm trying to find an affordable way around feeding these minces but so far had no luck, all the raw suppliers use minces and the only butcher I can get to doesn't do much more than bones.

Oh my good word, that's disgusting, Ted says an he have some   I would love to see you out and about training him using that :D

Only other thing I can think is do you have golf clubs/hunters around that you could contact to see if you can get cheap rabbits. I know a few people who've had success doing that in the UK and get them for £1 to £2 a go :D

Vile isn't it? Even Rupert went nuts for it though. It's not the easiest thing to train with as I can't bring myself to just stick my hand in there and pull a bit out but we're managing.

There's a couple of people looking into where we can get things like whole rabbit, pigs trotters, ox tails and stuff like that without paying a fortune. People over here seem to prefer these minces over carcasses or big chunks though :?

Can't remember if you're veggie or not but we get a whole chicken and take the breast meat off for us then I portion the rest into legs, wings attached to shoulder and backs. Makes about 6 meals for Ted so one for Spence

Lol, after we'd taken our meat off it wouldn't even make a whole meal for him. Think I might pop down to the butchers this week and see whether I can get anything from them. Someone has very kindly translated some stuff for me.

What about cutting up pieces of liver sausage, liver, chicken etc and baking them in the over so they are little 'treats' instead of a pile of mush? <uch easier to feed on walks!

That's what I was originally doing Ladybug but he's not been all that interested in them lately which is why I tried the raw. It's only really for recall so I'm hoping once we've re-established a good response I can go back to the lesser rewards most of the time and just use raw occasionally.

Would it help if all these go into a piping bag with a big enough hole cut up? The consistency looks thick enough to hold its own in a bag and giving squirts will certainly be "cleaner" than redipping a spoon, I imagine...
