Dental Problems and Raw Bones

Post by Helen2009 »

My rescue border has just had to undergo some surgery for her bad teeth. She had four bad molars removed and a descale and polish. I think she was fed on mainly tinned food before I had her and of course this has just built up over time. What I want to know is, to keep her teeth clean I intend to carry on feeding her raw chicken wings, but without the back molars (2 each side) will she be able to grind them up? Thanks in advance! Obviously I won't feed her something which might injure her or cause her pain.

Hi! The Virbac veggie dental chews are good.....they are expensive but really good and contain enzymes. I try to brush Dylan;'s teeth every other day and give him one of these chews either every day, or on the alternate days between brushing.

I wouldnt think her not havingt her back molars would mean she wont be able to crunch chicken bones up.

Try her with one, and hit it with a blunt instrument a few times first, to break the bones up, and see how she gets on. Feed this after a meal so she is more likely to take it slowly.

Hi, just a thought but if she struggles too much with chicken wings (fingers crossed she won't) you could try chicken backs and just remove/smash up the spine part as that seems to be the only bit that's really tough. The ribs, breast bones etc are much softer than the bones in chicken wings, further bonus is if you're butcher is nice you'll get them for free, or if not certainly very cheap.
