Post by emma-louise » Sat Jan 26, 2008 11:30 am

sounds daft but i was told by another dog walker that i shouldnt be walking jack every day and he should have one day with a walk and one with out etc etc, as it causes bad joints in them and that im doing him harm (this is from a man with a staffy so fat it can hardly breath  )

but he said this is what the vet told him and im woried now that im doing him harm i cant imagine not taking him for a walk hes so full of energy i would have a destroyed flet after the first day!

any advice?

cheers

Mm...

Daily walking very good for your pup (and crucial for his i suspect)... he is right that over exercise can do damage, but its better managed by small walks, no marathons and limiting crazy hurtling around up and down hills or stairs or rough ground.

Puppies dont know when to stop, and some will walk far further on a lead than they would have done loose, so a bit of attention needs to be paid to how far and how long you are walking for.

But not walking every day is probably not helpful - i suspect this chap is really kidding himself about his own dog really!

If you do think you are over walking, cut back and replace the time youd have spent walking playing games that require more mind than muscle - i can even tire out my collie x with games like this, but he could run for hours and not be tired otherwise!

If I didn't walk Ellie everyday she would drive me nuts and as you say destroy the house. I was told (might even have been on this forum actually) that as a rough guide you should go for 5 mins exercise (on lead) per month of your dogs age. Obviously this is dependant on the type of dog you have, as a collie will need more exercise than a maltese and it will also depend on your own dog's personality.

IMHO dogs should get out at least once a day, everyday. It doesn't have to be a massive walk but they should be able to get out and about to have a sniff get some fresh air and to run about. Also its very important for a pup to get out and about for socialisation purposes.

Mind games often come up but nobody says what mind games there are, how about a sticky thread for mind games Em?

Same here I walk Teagan every day I just try to limit running around like a loony (difficult!) especially on hard surfaces like concrete.

I love the hour or so after a walk though when she is nicely chilled out and happy to lie on her bed with a toy, she has calmed down so much for being able to go out on walks.

Every other day?? Blimee! I should be so lucky... ..(cue the song!)

I know when they are young and up to the age of 2ish you should be careful, but that is when they are charging round like loonies.... Measured walk/run ratio every day at least twice a day IMO is fine.

Read somewhere, could be here, read a lot!! "A tired dog is a happy dog".

He has a fat dog ..... Mine's over weight so a little less nosh and more walks are helping that!!!

cheers!

i thought it was a bit of 'male cow' i try to vary his walks any way so we have long walks on feilds, short walks on the road, vists to see people (which always tires him out!) switch where were going, do walks backwards etc etc etc all to keep it intresting for him and my fav a hour in the pub with every one fussing over him which leaves him shattered with out walking to far :D

would dread to think what my flat would look like if i didnt walk him all day its bad enough on my days off when we tend to go out later than usual!

I walk my papillon every day and he loves it! Even though he gets most of his exercise from running around!

Walking our Maltese Puppy

Post by suenchalie » Tue Aug 12, 2008 9:33 am

We've been trying to do daily walks with our 6 mth puppy, but with all the rain and T-Storms we've been having, it's been hard getting out. He runs a lot during the day and plays at least 2 hours as well. I don't think he's getting enough exercise though. He seems to have converted back to elminating in the house, more barking and crying and whining when we try to leave the room.

He usually ends his walks with a mad "run forest run" event. Loves to run around. How much walking is good for the little guy. He's only 3.5 lbs and we usually go for about 20 minutes. He's very spirited and playful and it never seems to be enough for him :)

How much is enough for him.

I walk my 4 1/2 month old Japanese Chin twicw a day. We go for about 20 minutes each time. Once in the morning and once in the evening. He walks on the concrete sidewalks. Is this bad for him? I really want to know because I certainly don't want to do anything to harm him. We play in the backyard a few times a day also. But I too have a bit of a problem with the recall. Thats a toughy for me but I stay deligently trying :)

I would maybe go half and half Sammiesmom :) the concrete will help wear down his toenails naturally (IE without you cutting them) but there is a bit of stress on his joints and tendons, I personally don't think 20 minutes twice a day will do any damage but if you're concerned let him walk in grass where possible (or dirt) just be sure if he does dooty to pick it up, neighbors will appreciate it.
