Does anyone know if it is a legal requirement in the UK to have your dog harnessed in the car or are they allowed to sit freely in the back?

No it is not a legal requirement at the moment but it may be eventually.
For your dog's sake you do need to have them contained in a car, either with a harness clipped to a seatbelt, in a crate or with 2 dog guards, one to stop them getting into the back seat and another to stop them jumping out of the car if the rear door is opened.
I have seen a dog go through the windscreen, I hope I never see it again, there was 2 of them, one was killed outright the other had to be pts at the scene.
If you have a dog that is jumping round the car while you are driving, the police can stop you and prosecute, I have heard of someone who's dog was on the parcel shelf sued because the dog was in a dangerous position, if they had to do an emergency stop the dog flying forward would have killed them.

We bought a short lead especially for the car. One end clips to your own harness and the other buckles into a standard seat belt. It looks like this: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi ... 602_304652
