I sent a note to Victoria about this device before I found this forum... =\
On the episode about Buster and Morgan, Buster was a terrier mix who would climb on the kitchen counters and steal food and/or urinate. In this episode, Victoria used an alarm that attached to the cabinet door that made a loud noise when the dog attempted to get on the cabinet.
I've searched and searched but have been unable to come up with anything similar to what she used. Does anyone have any ideas?
Thanks!

That was a very old episode. Victoria has since stopped using sound aversion. Instead, the most similar thing she has used recently is a walkie-talkie collar, by which she can send the dog verbal instructions. Of course, that only works if you have a camera set up so you can watch what the dog is doing, and give the instruction at the correct moment. Interestingly, some hunters use the same type of collar to give their dogs instructions in the field.
If an opportunity comes to you in life, say yes first, even if you don't know how to do it.

Is it not possible to close doors, put food away, use child locks on cupboards/fridges/drawers, use a dog crate?..
There really are other options than aversives, you sometimes just need to think outside the box a little.

We have to put our trashcans up on our counters, use one of my hair ties to "lock" the cabinet doors (we tie the two knobs together with it) AND put a chair in front of the door that we hair-tied shut to keep our 14 year old weenie out of trouble. Then we put a babygate in front of the fridge and put two more chairs in front of the babygate to keep our 7 year old weenie corralled in the kitchen when we leave.

I don't mean to highjack the thread here, but why doesn't Victoria use sound aversion anymore? Since Animal Planet still frequently shows the old episodes, it does give the impression that her training techniques haven't changed much.
Re: Alarm used on Buster and Morgan episode...
Aversives go against positive training methods. They get a dog to do (or not do) something by making a situation uncomfortable, painful, scary, etc. Positive training methods work by the dog figuring out that doing X makes WONDERFUL things happen, nothing bad happens to the dog, and having good manners, or following a command is a rewarding and positive experience for the pooch.
Re: Alarm used on Buster and Morgan episode...
You can't train a dog if you are not there, these aversions can have a terrible effect on some dogs, Victoria has the experience to know if a dog will be terrified of them or not but she doesn't use them now so this should tell you that there is something wrong with them.StormyTX wrote:Thanks, Fundog!

Dogs are wonderful at teaching us how to be tidy and put things away, makes our homes better to live in for us as well.
