What harness do I use? Im confused

Post by Mila »

Okay I have been reading through these threads and just got severely confused on what to do.

I have three dogs. I can't yet walk them all together cause they are a lot for just me to handle alone. One is a short mutt but weighs 35 lbs and thats all muscle. Another is a Husky mix weighing about 50lbs, the last is a Husky that weighs 38lbs. The Husky mix pulls but not so bad. The Husky will calmly walk beside me, loose leash. My shorty mutt pulls like there is no tomorrow.

The little shorty mutt, Fallon, pulls and wants to chase things while we walk. She always has to be in the lead and I want her to calm down a bit on this. I have been doing some things to help like distraction/redirection and/or stopping and sitting but I need a training tool like a good no pull harness. She has one now but it doesn't do diddly squat to help. The kind she has tightens under her arms but she doesn't care. I have read about the head harness but I don't like the idea of it potentially hurting her neck. Whiplash would be very possible with Fallon so I don't want to even risk it.

I think a harness that I can hook a leash to the front would possibly work but I'm not sure?????

I also got confused an the double stuff.....I don't understand it at all. If I get a halter that connects to the front I also need to connect to the collar or the top back part of the halter? If so then what length does the leashes need to be for each part. I'm so confused. I hope this make a lick of sense so someone can help me.

p.s. Pictures are a great help!

I was thinking this one might be the best, but not sure.

Hi, it is very confusing, there are so many diffent types of harness.

The only harness that fastens at the front of the chest that I found is the Halti harness, this also has a loop on the back for attachment. I use this with a Haliti training lead, which is a 6ft double ended lead with loops along it so you and lengthen or shorten it depending on what you want.

I use the Harness froont attachment ono one end of the lead and clip the other end of the lead on to her collar.

If I need ultimate control, ie walking on the street around children, I clip one end onto her harness and the 2nd onto a gentle leader head collar.

There is a post in Methods on how to train loose lead walking that is very helpful.

I would never use a headcollar with a flexi lead as it can cause wipelash, but on a short lead it is fine.
Just a note though that these tool are just that, they won't teach your dog not to pull, but can be a useful add while you are training that.

There are several other harnesses, I know Mattie swears by Trial harnesses.

Head Collar

Post by qkwyler »

I have a Coton de Tulear who has behaved aggressively toward other dogs and children. I have tried the Gentle Leader head collar, but he just paws at it until he gets it off.

Somewhere I saw a head collar that had an extra vertical strap that goes up over the top of the head. I think that would prevent him getting it off. But now I can't find it anywhere. I have searched and searched online. Has anyone seen one of these?

You would be better putting a basket muzzle on him, he can't bite then but he can't defend himself either. I don't like the head harnesses.

Mila posted a link http://www.mekuti.co.uk/harness_shop.htm a friend has recently bought one of these for her dog and it has given her the control she needed.

Although I don't have any experience of the Gentle Leader harness, I don't like anything that goes round the chest the way that does, that encourages pulling because it is easy to pull into. You can attack a lead to the front but don't know if it will help or not.
