What Harness to buy??

Post by Veronica » Tue Feb 15, 2011 7:25 am

Hi Guys,I am looking into buying a Harness, there are so many, all saying they are good.
I have had a no pull harness in the past, Snowy liked wearing it but I had no control from him lunging in it.

At the moment I use a Dogmatic with a double ended lead,it acts as a muzzle for snowy too, if he had a harness he would have to wear a muzzle.

The harness's all look good, I have research and looked at the Freedom No-Pull Harness, sensation harness

SENSE-ible Harness, and the esy walk which I have read can rub on the legs??

Taking in mind the lunging, which ones are good , my dog does understand not to pull but he a reactive dog,so pulls to get back home or away from what scares him and can lunge,so which one would help this? the Dogmatic solves all this but I am thinking a harness might make snowy feel more calm.

might consider something like this

not sure if it's available in the UK. I use it on Jack, and the black dog in the first picture in comments is one of the dogs on this forum, who is also reactive.

just my two cents/opinion...don't by something to take the place of training. make sure your choice benefits your training plan. at the very least by being a comfortable harness to wear thus not distracting your dog with uncomfortable kit.

You can get them in the UK, there are those like the one that Jack's Dad has recommended, http://dog-games-shop.co.uk/harnesses-fleece-lined, all my dogs have these, or you can buy the straps and make up the harness to suit your dog, not all dogs are the same size.http://dog-games-shop.co.uk/perfect-fit ... og-harness

There is also an article on harnesses http://www.dog-games.co.uk/harness.htm

Thank you for posting that link Mattie!

I see a new sewing project(s) in my future. I think I can use the dogs' backpacks as a measuring guide. I love that the walking harnesses buckle on rather than have to be put over the dog's head. Then if my scootering works out well and I decide to add Sirius to the mix, I can make her pulling harness. :D :D :D

Grammy to Sky and Sirius, who came to live with me, stole my heart, and changed my life forever as I took over their care and learned how to be a dog owner.

Hi Veronica, dogs can lunge in anything, with a harness you have control of the body and not the head, you can keep more control of your dog. With the Perfect Fit Harness you can have a ring on the front as well as the top, clipping a double ended lead or 2 leads will given you even more control over their body as you have hold of 2 places.

Why is your dog lunging? We may be able to help you with that as no gadget will stop it.

Thanks mattie, does that harness have a front ring clip on it already? or would you have to fit one on?

I have a thread on here already about Snowy and his issues--

viewtopic.php?f=4&t=9992

he is reactive to people, scared of people and it comes across as aggresive,he would lunge to keep them away from him.

Veronica, I don't recall Matti responding to your initial thread, but she has lots of experience with fearful/low confident dogs.

here is a method for loose lead walking that she wrote up

viewtopic.php?f=20&t=858

even though Jack keeps a loose lead 90% of the time or better. I have found going back into a quick minute or two of loose lead training helps refocus him after he reacts to something.

Thanks Jack's Dad, I have problems reading posts if there are a lot of text or if I have been on here for a while, I do put the print bigger but it is the colours that are affecting my eyes.
