anti social

Post by jacqueline »

Hi what do you suggest for my 2 year old dacshund. Whilst he loves my sons dog a 7 year old boxer, george can be very anti social with other dogs, he gets plenty of walks but when we come across another dog he pulls on the lead and goes mad.

It could just be on-leash excitability. Many dogs react when on leash and are fine when off-leash, but if he is inadequately socialised and you're not sure then take it slow.

Arrange for him to meet normal, stable, friendly dogs one at a time. See how he goes with that.

He definitely needs to learn some leash manners, you do this by working at a suitable distance from other dogs and rewarding calm behavior. Set your dog up for success, he should be continually succeeding so that you have something to reward.

Get closer slowly over time.

Aidan

Can you give more information on what he does and his body language when he sees another dog?

We need as much information as you can give, without it we could be giving you the wrong advice and that can be dangerous. :D

George will pull on the lead, his shackels go up and he appears quite ferocious.
However he gets on really well with my sons dog a 8 year old boxer.
I don't think it's just a leash problem because if i let him off he would simply run off it's in their nature to run at anything which moves.
He is a lovely little dog other than this problem.
He gets on well with people but i do have to tell people not to go straight down to him with their hands because he would snap, he has never bitten anyone though, i always ask people to come down to his level where he feels more comfortable.
