Barking at noises

Post by globe »

Our 4 year old dog has started to develop a really annoying habit of barking when she hears sounds outside (car doors slamming etc) - or believes she hears a noise anyway. The barking only lasts for a few minutes but she tends not to listen when she starts this. She will go sit on her bed but she still is on edge and often starts up again. Other than that she is pretty well behaved and obedient. Can I have some suggestions to help break this habit as it seems to be geting worse.

thanks in advance

Someone please tell me if this is the wrong thing to do. I normally don't post in the advice section.

How many times a day and for how long is she walked?

Removal:
When she starts barking, say enough or quiet (or anything you want as long as you use the same word all the time) and give her a 30 second time out in a different room. Then you can let her out again. Repeat. Praise and reward no barking.

Body Blocking:
This works if she runs to a window or door and starts barking. When she does, say enough or quiet. Then body block by walking into her and away from the door or window. Say back or back up while you do this. Praise and reward no barking.

Alot, including some long runs (15 plus kms) on the weekends out at the mountain bike park.

Have tried shutting in a quiet room, she just carries on barking in there.

Nono... not shutting away in another room for any length of time, a swift and purposeful removal from the room for 10 to 30 seconds and then shes let back in (or you can step out of the room yourselves if that is faster and makes a sharper point!).

Putting her out leaves her to amuse herself and has no 'shock' value at all... she will just carry on barking then.

Try the time out properly and do it every single time, even if that means you are up and down like a yo yo.
