Excited whining in car

hello, my 1 year old cocker spaniel has just started whining in the back of the care whenever we get close to my work in the morning or the house in the evening, He has occasionally started much earlier and whined for most of the journey.
He does need to go to the toilet and is just excited.
How can I nip this in the bud in a positive way whilst driving?

You can try covering the crate with a sheet or towel - it might help him relax and not be concerned with what's outside the car. He might not be able to tell when you're getting close to your destination.

I would also try giving a kong with some peanut butter in it, or a similar easy but time-consuming food toy/treat.
