Sorry this is breif ...... dashing off to find something to eat...

But, if he isnt recalling from distractions sucsh as other dogs then he should NOT be off the long leash. Letting him off the long leash is you attempting to push his progress too fast, so go back to the leash and harness, let him trail it. Practice games of hide and seek with him on it so he has incentive and motivation to return to you and keep an eye on you.

Also IF you have friendly dogs around whose owners you can speak to, talk to them and ask if they can help you. Allow your dog to meet and greet on the long leash, ask him to recall WHEN he looks like he isnt so interested [have these other dogs be on a long leash also if possible, if they wont recall otu of playing off leash], and then allow him back to play once he has recalled, so that he DOESNT learn that recall = end of play.

The other thing to add in is that he doesnt get to go and meet other dogs until YOU decide its ok [ie, you have asked the other owner if its ok, done a mental assessment of their dog to see if it is the sort of dog you want him playing with].

Working away from the recall issue, on self control susch as the 'its yer choice' stuff [look on youtube, susan garrett, 'its yer choice'] and leslie mcdevitts Control Unleashed will also give you some further help, ideas and control.

Exercise is not just about the physical, its about the mental - brain training tires a dog out a LOT so to make up for the reduced running around [which actually will just make your dog fitter and fitter,a nd therefore require more and more exerciise!] do plenty of training, clicker training, puzzle solving games and activities.
