Hi

Post by Kala »

I'm Kala, I'm from Iowa, and I love It's Me or the Dog. :) I just got my first dog from rescue 11 days ago. Her name is Daisy, she's two years old and a Shih Tzu mix. We're working on training her to be an assistance dog for me. We're just doing basic commands right now. I wish there a was Positively Trainer in Iowa, unfortunately there isn't. So we're having to do everything ourselves. I know we have a lot of work to do, but in the end it will be worth it.

Thanks. What's +R training mean? Your dog is so cute. :)

Vik: You came up with it.
Charlie: That's the problem, what do I know?

Hi and welcome. :)

Basically, R+ stands for the technical term Positive Reinforcement (capitalised).

It's short for "positive reinforcement," the "+" for positive and "r" for reinforcement. :) Thank you; Daisy is adorable too! You should put some pictures of her up here!

I don't know if you've heard of it, but I've seen several people recommend "A Dog Who's Always Welcome" for people training their own assistance dog. It's on my list to read (Delta may make a good therapy dog) and it looks pretty good! I think it covers more "public manners" than any specific task, but manners are something I have the most trouble with teaching, haha.

And, of course, if there's any sort of question you have we are always happy to help. :D
