Art gallery dogs

Post by bendog »

Went to the Louvre in Paris on Saturday afternoon and as well as the famous artworks - mona lisa, venus de milo etc, I also found it interesting seeing how dogs were depicted in various pieces.

These are from french, maybe belgian? tapesteries dating back to around the 1500's showing mostly hunting/village life scenes.

Ring of dogs - for fighting? Training? I have no idea!

Greyhoundy type dogs

Setter?

One of the few lady dogs. Most seemed to be boys! Amazes me that the artists even went to the detail of giving the boy dogs and horses testicles! This lady looks like she has had a few litters :(

Can't accuse the tapestry weavers of glamorising life. There is a dog having a poo on this one!

Similar era - 1500's dutch (? I think!?) paintings

It's really interesting looking at the different shapes of the dogs and comparing them with today's breeds. They all have floppy ears - some look more like lop-eared rabbits

Thanks for posting :D

Thank you SO MUCH for posting these. :D Invaluable records of dogs as they were.

I love the Jasper lookalike!

Anyone else think the pooing dog has a tapeworm? Artist's joke?

What about the resigned expression of the hound being cuddled by the children  wonder if that's one of her pups on the right?
