Any guess on the breed mix?

Post by OhioRuthie »

I got a new rescue in the other night...I was told the mom is a pit and the dad they are guessing to be a chocolate lab based on the puppy's ginger/brown coloring. The ears are HUGE. We are guessing her age to be at youngest six months old. Any guess on the mix?
It's been hard to get her to sit still long enough for a photo...so they are weird angles...wortha try though..what do you think?

Thanks!

I'd wager the ears are just a freaky genetic mutation (Even God has a sense of humour!), and she is a pit/lab mix, as first guessed. 8)

Definitely pit bull terrier, maybe labrador. Really only the tail is throwing me off, as I've seen some pitties with ears like that. I doubt this is part of it, but her face almost makes me think vizsla.

Thanks...loked up vizsla she has a tail like them...I see the vet on Monday...maybe she will give a guess too. I'm hoping it won't be hard to find her a loving forever home.

Thanks...That was my first guess too...I guess I'll see what the vet says on Monday. We have such strict rules regarding pitts...a mix with a lab would be a good thing...and make it easier to find her a good home...so much pitbull fighting around here so sad.

OhioRuthie, as you already know, pitt bulls aren't bad dogs, it is the things man has done to them! They got a bad reputation from what people have heard in the media, all due to what these pitt bull owners did or did not do (trained them to fight or didn't train them properly). That is the fault of humans, not the breed!

I know a lot of people who have pitt bulls and have found these dogs to be friendly. Fortunately, these same people I know take the time to properly train their dogs to be well-behaved. I think the more "the word" gets out and people understand, I think the so-called "reputation of pitt bulls" will eventually cease. Show such as "It's Me or The Dog" and "Pitt Boss" are doing a lot of good in reversing the negative feelings, thoughts people have about pitt bulls.

Just hang in there, soon Gypsie will get her forever home, where her new owners will love her just as much as you have!

In my neighborhood we have had only one pit incident and it was a drug dealers dog that he trained to be mean and to hang from limbs to strengthen her jaw. Another pit was chasing a neighbors cat...I picked that one up and took her home..she was very sweet. The druggie moved away...the only dog people need to be wary of is a rat terrier/chihuahua mix down the street..he goes after people..when he's out the mailman won't deliver to his house. All my time with animals...its the smaller terriers and chihuahuas that I find to be the most aggressive. Pitts have always been so passive...I do something I probably shouldn't...I go to dogs in cars in parking lots I'm in...the friendliest have been the pitts...I don't go to cars with the little barky dogs. Pitts have always greeted me with such enthusiasm...like I've been a friend who's been away for a long time when meeting them for the first time. I picked up Gyspy and she came right with me...laid her head on my shoulder on the car ride home with ocassional kisses on my cheek. Gypsy seems to overcome abuse faster than any other breed I've cared for...she still does a ducking thing and she gets scared (puts her head down on the ground and pees herself) if I stand in the doorway asking her to come in the house..so I either step back or go out with her and come in together...but still her level of trust towards me is amazing for what's she's been through. I wish people weren't so afraid of her.

It's sad usually the neighborhood comes out to meet new rescues....not the case for Gypsy. No treats, no fuss...there wasn't many for Riley either. Funny that a GIANT hundred pound german shepherd didn't scare them..pure bred...but a pit mix and rottie mix does. But people discriminate against each other based on appearance every day so I guess this shouldn't surprise me.

Just back from vet and we are going with Pit/chocolate lab mix may also have some mini pin/dobermen in her. Probably about seven months old. 34lbs. Treating her skin before getting her boosters...have to call her on monday to see how the meds are working for Gypsy...she's unsure what the skin problem is so we are starting with a shampoo and promeris...thinks its the type of mange that comes with birth if the immune system doesn't kick in....not contagious...so we are treating for this and allergies (benedryl)...she wants to know if there is any changes by Monday. She did three skin tests and all were negative...so its all a precaution. She isn't constantly scratching so we think its nothing big...can't give her steroid shot for allergies cause if it is the birth mange (can't remember name) it will make it worse...so we wait til monday and go from there.

But we were right..primarily a pit/chocolate lab mix!

She has the exact ears and toes...wow!

I forgot to add that someone in the office was doing the "leave it" command. I asked if they watched IMOTD and they said yes. That was cool. They had a boxer that was so sweet...totally played with Gypsy the whole time they waited. The dog even kissed me goodbye..sweet dog.
