Hello! I just recently adopted a three year old Great Pyrenees. He is very well behaved in general, very laid back personality. He walks great on a leash and knows a few basic commands.
His only issues are jumping on people and barking/lunging at cats.
Now, I've read quite a few things on training a Pyr. Some say to be gentle and some say to be strict. He seems to be very sensitive to correction, but you really have to drive the point hard that he is doing some bad. He is great at training otherwise, though he is very slow to respond.
For the record I have had dogs all my life, worked very closely under a professional dog trainer for many years, and have fostered tough cases for numerous dog shelters. I've just never owned a "independent/stubborn" dog breed before. Most of the dogs I have worked with were happy go lucky and very eager to please.
Any tips for this first time Pyr owner?
