long haired GSD

Post by master2 »

Hi all

My cousin is research breeds at the moment and he did fall for the great dane but when he was at a breeders house getting to know Danes he met a GSD and fell in love with the breed also with my GSD Sherlock. But the breeders was long haired were my is short and he was wondering if long haired GSD are more mellow as the breeders was compared to mine.

I did not know the anwser to this so thought I would ask on here.

I did tell him that Sherlock is half German showline and half German workingline. Plus he get 2hrs of exercise a day and lots of mental exercise. But he said the breeders just seemed more mellow. The only thing I could think of was mybe hers is from pet breeders?

Are there any differences with longhaired

I Googled long-haired German Shepherds and found some very interesting information. While it is a recessive gene that causes the long hair, some breeders are starting to breed specifically for the long hair. Most articles I viewed stated that the long haired dogs have an even better temperament than the short haired version and tend to bond even closer with their humans.

I'm sure others here will have some valuable info for you, but I would suggest Googling it and see what you can learn. :D

You can get long and short haired in the same litter. As Suzette says, some breeders breed specifically for long hair - which means a smaller gene pool.

Temperamentally you get as much variation in long hairs as short hairs.
A dog is never bad or naughty - it is simply being a dog

My neighbour has two long-haired GSDs and they are quite nervy and can be snappy. I don't think they got much in the way of socialisation though so that might not be helpful.
