i cant belive i have a new puppy

Post by Theo400 »

Hi

firstly I would like to say that it has not sunk in yet that I have a new beautiful Dal pup as I promised myself I would wait until next year and I had not even decided on a Dal.

Friday Just Gone I was putting my washing out to dry on the line and a Dal pup ran through my privets (looks like a shrub or bush incase I have spelt it wrong  ) at first I was shocked as I had not seen a Dal round Here, even though I wanted to keep him I knew it was best to take him to the vet so I took him that afternoon I was allowed in to see the vet I told him what happened, he weighed the pup and told me he was under weight his nails were very long which I could see, he also had Fleas and an ear infection and yet he was still wagging his tail and wanting to lick me and the vet he was just adorable the vet checked for a microchip which he had and my heart sung :( I was gutted so I did not expect to hear from the vet again. yesterday he phoned me and asked if I would be interested in the Dal puppy as then he wont need to go in rescue so I asked about the owner and the vet told be in the 20+ yrs he has worked as a vet he has never been so disgusted or shocked he phoned the number on that he was given by petlog and it was a woman who answered and admitted that she was the owner so he said that she can come and pick the pup up but she told him that wont be happening as she is not interested in the puppy anymore as he is to big he is not a cute puppy anymore  :x . WHAT

I was appalled (again sorry if that is not the right spelling) that someone can just throwaway a puppy like that.

I said yes I would love to rehome him so I got down there ASAP and he is on meds for his ear his fleas seem to have cleared up good and his eating ok just needs to put on some weight. the vet said that he found out that he is 5months old. I have named him after my fave actor Diesel after Vin Diesel.

I do have tow things to ask one I will put in the health section the other I can put here

I was reading this earlier https://positively.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=21210 and was wondering as I know the lab and GSD very well which is the Dalmatian more likely to be like a GSD or a Lab.

I read that they were bred to run alongside Carriages so presume they would be like labs in that they listen to commands in the same way

what do you think? and I look forward to hearing from you all :)

Most important is for you to get paperwork from the owner signing the dog over to you and then change the microchip details to your ownership. The vet cannot do this - it has to come from the owner. If she has signed the dog over to the vet, then he can transfer ownership to you. But verbal is no good - you need paper.

Dals are high-endurance mobile guard dogs. Their job was to run between the rear wheels of horse-drawn vehicles and protect them from highwaymen and other criminals. So they are not at all like labs or GSDs and in training terms would be more like a Rhodesian Ridgeback.

If you care to buy a horse and vehicle  there are competitions you can enter just for dals running with them just as they used to. Not sure about highwaymen though!

What a twist of fate!

I agree with Nettle that you want it in writing that the old owner has relinquished the pup to you.

Congrats and I hope we can see some pics soon! :)

Hi Everyone

after reading the comments I asked the vet straight away and he said that is what he was trying to do to get her to sign him over but on paper not verbal.

anyway I had been looking after him while the vet was sorting it out as he has no more kennels left for the Dal so I said I will take him until the paper work is done. he came to live with me on Thursday (last week) and I had him until today. the Evil so and so had phoned the police on the vet  to say they were not giving back her stolen puppy  . the vet phoned earlier today and said I need to bring the puppy back in so I did and the police have took him back to her. he did explain to them the real situation but they were not listening. and what has really ticked me off is I have now seen an ad in Tesco (it was on this board) selling a male Dal for £800 I took a photo of it and showed to the vet and he said that is the same number he phoned her on. I cant believe she put the puppy and all of us through this just to get £800

However even though I had him for only 3 and half days I really liked having a dog in the house and will not rush into buying a puppy but would like to bring a new dog in my life this year and every thing just seemed to disappear when I had the Dal.

I have Been thinking though about breed and before this happened I was going to ask if Nettle or anyone else knows anything on the Schnauzer (standard and mini) and how they compare to GSD as it is between them 3 breeds. I have read that schnauzers are from Germany.

Mini schnauzers are fairly easy to find (beware puppy farmers) nice sparky little things with a can-do attitude but not as predatory as terriers.

Standard (Mittelschnauzers) are quite hard to find (beware small gene pool) but in general very nice dogs.

Giant schnauzers are a specialist breed as their original job was guarding. Possibly not for you this time but maybe when you have had several dogs and the time to commit.

Coat needs have to be taken into account, and check out potential health issues.
