Another guess the breed. Really need help with this one!

Post by OnceInAWeil »

My friend adopted a puppy from a rescue earlier this year, and we're not sure what he is. At this point our best guess is some sort of collie mix. (My friend is pretty short, around 5'4")

This is his sister from the same litter, for reference.

I'm seeing husky rather than collie. May we have a side-on portrait please, the whole dog including tail and feet? Thank you.

I'll ask my friend to take one. :) I don't think he has any full-body side views at the moment.

my first thought was husky also........but the sister sure does have traditional collie markings.

that said, in the 4th picture i'm picking up wolf hybrid........the narrow chest, and the long pasterns can you tell me, in the 4th pic, is that natural coat or has it been shaved and is growing out?

Don't forget sister may have had a different father  Do you know what the mother looked like?

Yep, a bit of husky was my first impression too. And I also had the same thought as Nettle about "who's your daddy" concerning brother and sister since they don't look tremendously alike.

That one picture of the dog standing on the rocks sure makes him look like the coyotes we have around here, coloring and all. Wonder if there is a bit of hybrid hiding in his parentage or simply that his mix gives that impression.

Really? I thought he looked a lot like his sister, minus coloration.

His fur is natural in all of the pics, and we do not know what the mother looked like. We had thought maybe some coyote, too, because we have them here and he seems to have a kind of wiry, feral appearance to his body. His head looks too big for his body, fringed by all that fur.

that narrow chest where there isn't a hands width between the front legs and the super long pasterns do certainly suggest wolf or coyote hybrid.

check out this picture of a coyote dog hybrid

What are coyote hybrids like temperament-wise? is there anything in his behaviour that could strengthen the possibility that this is what he is?

He's super-cute, whatever he is :D

How old is the dog? Juveniles don't thicken up for 18 months to a year.

He is shy of new people, which could be explained by some hybrid genes, but that could be because of improper socialization, too. He also was quick to bite as a really little guy. If you surprised him by trying to pick him up, he had no qualms with whipping around and trying to tag you.

He is still a baby, about 9 months. And he is pretty adorable, isn't he? :)

More pics. These are older ones because my friend is away for a research project and hasn't had a chance to get that side view.

He has a husky-ish face frame.

Here is a picture with a tail, although from when he was younger. It looks about the same now, a little longer and a little fluffier toward the end.

Side view, but sitting and no tail.

Lol, I'll wait for the profile with tail and feet pics

He still looks mainly husky to me.

Many puppies woud bite if picked up. Dogs in general don't care for being picked up. We'd be pretty snarky if a gorilla picked us up.

Could he be like chow - collie mix? At least that would be my guess. Google image search also gives similar looking dogs. Though I don't know how the tongue color would be hereditary. Also looks a little like a heeler to me.

OH! I forgot to mention, he does have some black spots on his tongue, although you can't see them in the pictures. I know there are several breeds that could cause that, though.
