Fight, avoided

Post by rnor1120 »

Today foster dog lunged and tried to bite Chance. It was my fault. I just bought a new bag of dog food and threw it on the floor when I got home. I've fed the two dogs simultaneously, given them treats together, and Cricket was spoon-fed wet dog food in a group of several dogs at the clinic today, so it didn't even occur to me that she might be a bit of a resource-guarder. Anyway, Chance walked by the bag of food to follow me into my bedroom, and Cricket lunged, growled, and tried to bite him. My stomach dropped because I thought that surely my dog-aggressive Chance would retaliate. Instead, Chance stood behind me with a confused and almost hurt look on his face.

"But, but... I thought we were friends :( ."

Anyways, poor boy didn't even attempt to fight her and I've learned an important lesson in management. Cricket went into time out for a few minutes and Chance was rewarded handsomely.
