“Rover, sit. Sit. SIT. SitSitSit!!!” It's ok to repeat cues?

Post by Noobs »

Anyone care to offer their thoughts on repeating cues? Dr. Dunbar talked about this in the video with Zak George posted last week and I wanted to comment on it and ask for opinions but didn't have time. I'm curious to know what some of you think.

Not sure how to put this, if I one of my dogs is concentrating on something and I ask him to say, sit, if he doesn't I know he is totally focused on what he is doing so to repeat the command is useless. In this situation I will try and get my dog's attention before asking him to sit again, I don't see the point in wasting time and energy asking a dog to sit when I know he won't.

I can get his attention in several ways, call his name, stand up and go to move away, touch him gently, etc. Once I get his attention I can ask for sit again.

My dogs can tell when I really mean I want him to sit now or if he can take his time, if they are taking longer than normal I will often give the command again.
