This probably should be under breed discussions, but I know there are
greyhound owners and those familiar with greyhounds here, and I
wondered if I might as a question or two about this breed, as I know
nothing at all.
A senior friend of mine is considering adopting one. She wonders
(and I do as well) if they will do a couple of the things my collies
do that she finds reasurring.
1. Are they at all protective of their people?
2. Will they alert if something is happening outside (or inside)
that she needs to know about, such as someone at the door or
window, etc.
Thanks in advance to anyone who takes the time to anwer
questions about greyhounds?

I can only talk about how Merlin was, wouldn't have missed him for anything, he was such a gentle dog.
Tilly will allert but that is out of fear, she allerts, if you can call it that, because she is frightened.
Merlin wasn't, he was protective of himself not me, left the protection of me to others Tilly is the same, she isn't protective of me and she is Greyhound/Belgian Malinois.thepennywhistle wrote: 1. Are they at all protective of their people?
Merlin only alerted if my other dogs, particularly Joe, did, he would join in but was far too busy sleeping to do anything else. I am sure the only reason he joined in was because he could no longer sleep.2. Will they alert if something is happening outside (or inside)

Re: questions about greyhounds?
Yes, just as Mattie says. They are mainly silent dogs, not given to barking at all, though they have a huge vocabulary of yowly croony noises. They can bark, and some may warn if there is a stranger about, but that is because these stately dogs are very sensitive, and easily become anxious.
If your friend wants a bouncy barky dog, she doesn't want a greyhound. If she would like a long elegant ornament (my friend calls them House Dragons) that can run like the wind and has a huge laughing grin, then she does.

A dog is never bad or naughty - it is simply being a dog

Re: questions about greyhounds?
Thank you for sharing the info on the greyhounds. They are wonderfully
elegant dogs and I love the House Dragon nickname. I think one
would be perfect for my friend. It is another single senior household, very
quiet, very stable, all books and music, and she is very must focused on
adoring her cats, so the doggie would be adored as well. AND she has a
6 foot privacy fence with padlocked gates so doggy could run a bit and be safe.
She knows my collies function as something between my security system
and security blanket, and wondered if a greyhound would alert her as to
what was going on around her the way my collies do. I will tell her not
to expect it, but I don't think that will matter adoption-wise
