need some advice

Post by chijack01 »

i have been having problems with my jack russell, she barks too much when some one strange comes either to the door or is walking by. her hair stands up from her tail all the way up to her coller. i have tried several things to distract her but she is just not getting it. what can i do to help her? i know that this breed is a little barky, but is she supposed to bark every time?

Well I'm not sure but, every time I have a problem with my dog or just want to practice training dogs I just go to this website:

I hope it can help. I found this website because I wanted to become a dog trainer(and still dream to) and this helped me train my own pups..

that site recommends Cesar Millan methods and doesn't fit in with the positive training that we do on here. I would keep clear of that site.

chijack01can you tell us what you have tried, what you dog does and when.

Mmm... ill remove that link I think and just to remind people - if its not positive reinforcement based site, do think VERY carefully about posting a link (sometimes its appropriate but generally.. not).

Cookielover - ive deleted the link to that site because it advises some very dangerous things to do, and it is a dangerous mix of sensible stuff... and really really stupidly dangerous stuff so its really hard for newcomers to dog behaviour to pick out whats ok and whats liable to get them bitten or make their dog worse.

The other issue with links is the more links a site gets, the higher up the results list it gets and so more people go there - and obviously with a site promoting potentially dangerous things, thats not good!

I generally like my dogs to bark when someone is there, but when I tell them "enough" I expect them to stop.

i have tried:

throwing treats down to distract her

walking the other way with her when we are out side and she starts to go off on some one.

tell her "enough"

ignore her

put her in a kennel in another room and tell her enough.

water bottle

i have been having problems with my jack russell, she barks too much when some one strange comes either to the door or is walking by. her hair stands up from her tail all the way up to her coller.
These are signs that she is frightened but many people treat them by using aggression to the dog to solve the problem, this never works but makes the problem worse. Spraying a dog with water is using aggression to them and many dogs will retaliate by biting so don't use this again.

Once she starts to react like this it is too late to do anything, apart from the fight or flight part of her brain the rest has shut down so no matter what you do to her won't work, she doesn't hear you. You need to take action BEFORE she reacts.

When out you are a lot taller than she is and can see people coming towards you, walk the other way before she sees them not when she is reacting. The more she reacts the more she will react.

In your house does she go to the door with you? I always keep a door between my dogs and the front door, my dogs are safe from escaping and don't feel threatened by who is at the door.
