Skin problem?

Post by i_are_chanel »

I was doing a flea check on my dogs after finding a few fleas on my mother-in-laws springer spaniel. I didn't find any fleas, but on Lexi's left hind leg i found a spot where the hair seemed to fall out...but it wasnt just a spot. it was a red bump. her skin was slightly flakey in this area. after doing some research I thought maybe it was just a spider bite. well, i found another bump yesterday, and today that area now has 3 more bumps near it. Should I be concerned? I mean, I AM worried! I spent the last 40 mins looking up skin conditions and looking at pictures but nothing really looks like what is on Lexi. I have proded, poked, and pulled these bumps and none of it seemed to phase Lexi, so I don't think it's bothering her. I dont want to take her to the vet because it seems like everytime I get worried and take my dogs to the vet it turns out to be nothing. We are getting ready to move, and i'd rather not spend the money if i dont have to.
Please help! I need to know if I should be worried about Lexi!

I would just keep an eye on the area and look for signs of swelling or infection...ozzing pus, radiating heat, pain.

It could be mosquito bites, flea bites, and any assortment of bug bites or stings.

Again, just keep an eye on it, use some topical antibiotic (neosporin) and all should be fine.

If the ideas that others have posted don't seem to address the problem and it does not go away on it's own, more spots appear or the ones already there, you might want to consult a canine dermatologist. My regular vet tried to clear a case of Staph my girl got for almost 2 years, nothing worked because you need to culture to find out what it is and prescribe the correct treatment. My regular vet would give a cours of antibiotics but they were not the right ones for the infection nor were they to be given long enough.

Sometimes you need to see a specialist. I will tell you I spent far less on the dermatoligest for one trip than I did for the several trips to my regular vet.

I am wondering if your dog might have a case of "hot spots" but if you are truly concerned, the dermtoligist might be your best choice.

Good luck
The best days are spent with my dogs.
