New Puppy

Hey guys we just got a puppy yesterday, he is 11 week old Yorkie. When we first went to pick him up he was very scared of us and so was his brother and mom. We figured they haven't been socialized much, seeing as they were alone outside. He seems to be scared of other dogs and people now that we have brought him home. He has warmed up a bit to us but we are worried he will have a lot of work ahead of him. Any ideas on how to gradually socialize our new pup with others and other dogs? Another thing... he has a hard time getting comfortable. Are we just being scared first time parents? Thanks!

Others will be able to give better advice than me on socialising a young, nervous pup, but you may well have serious problems ahead. A naturually nervous dog should not be bred from in the first place, and if the pup hasn't had any socialisation at 11 weeks he could have issues that can't be overcome. This sounds like a very bad breeder, I'm afraid.

I would even suggest you return the pup and start looking for one bred with more care. It may sound callous, but it could save you a lot of heartache in the long run.

If this isn't an option for you, though, we will support you and give you as much advice as we can along the way.

He is having a had time getting comfortable..... C'mon, guys, it's been one day! Give the chap a chance and a little bit of time, he is just a tiny baby dog among huge unfamiliar monsters and unknown things.

Thanks for the advice! We will continue to keep a close eye on him and socialize him as much as possible. I will keep you updated!

Socializing as much as possible is a good thing, but only if encounters are enjoyable and stress free. Quality over quantity

Aim to have him happy with his immediate 'family' - you and yours - before you expose him to others. Then he'll see you as a safe place to go to. Otherwise he'll feel very alone and scared. And be sure not to overwhelm him with touching - less is more when you have a nervous one.

Update... Milo seems to be comfortable with us. When we have family and friends come over he seeks us out to hide next to for comfort. This seems like a good start! When guests come over we provide them with treats on hand to show Milo they are friendly. When we go on walks he doesn't seem interested in people when they want to greet him. Seems as if this little pup will just need some time. Thanks for all the replies, any other suggestions are greatly appreciated!
