Clicker training with unusual animals

Post by minkee »

I've seen a few of these lately and I thought I'd share. :D

Highland cow! This one is just lovely http://youtu.be/CJsIVy8jTAc

Meeses! Who knew they were so smart? http://youtu.be/t8XZ-_EgWB8

Hyenas! Presenting their necks for blood taking http://youtu.be/Bs-tAHqGruY

Oops I just realised that I saw the last one from on here anyway. Oh well! It's still jolly impressive.

We have Asian short clawed otters where I work although unfortunately i dont get to work directly with them.
I'm not sure they were clicker trained exactly but they do use positive R with them to get them to voluntarily go into crates to go to the vet, and to present paws for checks/nail trims, have their mouths opened to check teeth etc. As its much easier for keepers of animals with sharp teeth to teach positive associations and get them do stuff voluntarily than try to force them!

They also get fed via a mix of scatter feeds and puzzle toys!

We have cows there too, might have to get onto clicker training them!

And that's also reminded me of this otter that was taught to dunk baskets as part of his physical therapy :D

Those rats are brilliant! And soooooo cute!

Do you think if you trained one to help with laces, bring you things you've dropped, and so on, you could register it as a support pet and take it into pubs, cafes & restaurants with you?

There's a bit in that story about a dog biting off a diabetic's infected toe. I've heard some excuses in my time... 'Honestly hooman... I had to bite that hand, the one that was reaching to take the bone out of my mouth, otherwise you'd have got gangrene. It was for your own good. Arf Arf! Now gimme my bone back and I'll give you your finger back...'

I've seen some videos of monitor lizards, tegus, and frill-neck lizards being clicker trained as well. I'll see if I can dig those up.

I am going back through Don't Shoot the Dog, and Karen says she had a college say he had "clicker" trained a clam I believe it was to clap. She also says that marine mammal trainers often claim they can train through shaping any animal with in the limits of its mental and physical ability.

since its all the stuff behind the click that really counts, I would think you can "clicker" train any animal to do something on cue.

me...still working on the dog and wife....wife may be the exception to the "any animal" theory .........
