Gorgeous greyhound adoption video

Post by chay »

hello all!

i really wanted to share this lovely video, made by a blogger i follow about the retired racing greyhound, dudley, her family adopted.

i know there is a lot of personal preference around adoption/rescue vs. getting a dog from a breeder, but i just thought this video was so lovely it was worth sharing, not just for the greyhound enthusiasts on the forum but ALL us dog lovers. the transformation from the scared, despondent looking dog at the beginning of the video to the utterly joyful, playful dog sprinting across an open field at the end got me a little bit teary!

Awesome video! :D I have yet to meet a rescued greyhound who hasn't totally stolen my heart. I'm fortunate to have a neighbor a few streets down with a rescued greyhound. We walk our dogs around the same time each day, so I get my "fix" on an almost daily basis. :D

Beautiful video I met a lady through the local dog walking group that works in greyhound rescue. Her greyhound was such a mellow fellow compared to all of the other dogs in the group. Unless we happened to see horses out on the trail. They really caught his attention.  A greyhound is definately on my list of a possible future dog. They are so beautiful when running.

I've wanted a rescue greyhound since I was 15. But I keep ending up with more bloody terriers!!

I will have a greyhound one day I think they are beautiful dogs and the couch potato aspect definitely appeals!

Oh, me too Bendog. I've wanted a greyhound for years, but rescues (at least the ones I have contacted) won't adopt out to homes with cats. Since cats are as necessary to my happiness as dogs are, I guess it's just not meant to be for me. :(

Can you go straight to a trainer, Suzette? I don't know what the situation is where you live, but in UK you get a much better greyhound if you go straight to a trainer. A lot of young greyhounds are discarded because they won't chase, which is ideal for you. As with any other profession, you get good and bad, but most trainers run a 5* hotel for their racers and a lot are rehomed straight from kennels.

Thanks for the info Nettle, I'll definitely look into that. :D

I am curious Nettle as to why "in the UK you get a much better Greyhound if you go straight to a trainer". I have collected many a Greyhound direct from trainer to go into rescue kennels or foster homes. I have fostered on behalf of rescues, some have come direct from trainer without a stay in rescue kennels others have been in kennels a while. Some have needed more help in settling into a home environment, others have made the transition easily. I honestly don`t see how some-one looking to home a greyhound is going to get a `lesser` Greyhound if they take one from a rescue.

I love greyhounds although since my last foster left the buliding I have been without one. I have cats Suzette, two infact :) Alot depends on the character of the cat. Mine are laid back but `don`t bother me` types. Some of the Greyhounds that have been here are keener that others, but all have ended being OK with my cats, but would still chase other cats given the chance.

Fingers crossed! Piper loves most other dogs, so I think it has a good chance of working out wonderfully. Plus, I just have to smile at the picture my sturdy little, shortie-legged Corgi will make next to a graceful, long-legged greyhound!

Well, the problem for me has been that I can't find a rescue that will adopt to me since I have cats. It's just their policy, so it's been out of my hands. Plus, I certainly don't want to put my cats in jeopardy. But if I can find a rescued greyhound that will live happily and safely with my cats as Nettle has suggested, then it's something I will definitely look into. :D

We saw a ridgeback, bassethound twosome this morning. They were a great sight so Piper plus a greyhound would be wonderful :D Bendog and her 4 terriers, you're looking to double up ... note to self "I do not want a puppy, I do not want a puppy ..."
