Has dog equipment taken over your life

Post by ClareMarsh »

After Ari's Dad mentioned that he has a million  harnesses for Ari and my fourth lead (not counting an extendable one I bought in error early doors and ended up giving away) arrived today I thought it might be fun :D / scary  to hear how many of us are dog equipment obsessives (not sure if I am yet but I can see myself going that way ...)

I've had Ted 6 months now and have managed to collect so far (ignoring harnesses he grew out of):

2 harnesses:
- a puppia step in vest I use when he doesn't need a coat and for when he's in the car with his car seat
- another puppia harness that fits nicely over his coats

4 leads:
- a 4/5ft short lead that I used for puppy classes
- a 6ft Halti double ended lead that can be hooked into many combinations (although I only use it in about two of them  ). I walk him on this if he's going off lead or if we're just walking down the street
- a 50ft training line (which amuses people no end as he is so small) which I use on the local heath mostly as it is unfenced and surrounded by roads and bike paths. Ted barely notices it's there and working with this has improved his recall no end
- a 20ft training line which arrived today. We're gong to Cornwall in March and I wanted something I can use on the beach if it's busy but isn't as labour intensive as the 50ft line :D

A bag for when I take him on the train / on long walks where he needs to be carried a way due to his age

A car seat which boosts him up to be able to see out of the window and keeps him safe on journeys. I didn't want him rattling around in a crate as I pretty much weekly do two 3 to 4 hour journeys with him and I wanted to be able to see him so that he was sort of keeping me company on the journey  . I found what is effectively a booster seat that straps to the seat using the car set belt and has it's own seat belt that clips to his harness. It does make him look like a pampered pooch (and maybe his is  ) but he never had any issue with travelling from the first time I used it. He now tends to watch out the window for 10 minutes then goes to sleep and stays that way until the engine is switched off :D

Then there's a dog bed, a bean bag, blankets, two kongs, toys bought and made of various descriptions ...

Ok, ok, I am a dog equipment obsessive, perhaps this thread will be dangerous as I'll start obsessing over things you guys have

In short - YES!

It's not just dog stuff in my case as I have 3 cats as well, sometimes I really feel like I live in some strange kennel with them instead of them living in a human house with me. It's just all animals all the time really. I have 5 pet beds and a 5 ft cat tower in my very small living room/kitchen plus a big box of toys, water bowls, a big bin for dried food and often a play box for them as well. You can't move in my flat without finding a treat tub, a brush or toy or lead or something animal related.

My current obsession is small soft toys from charity shops, I just can't say no as they're only about 50 cent and Honey's really only gotten into toys/playing in the last few months so I'm still learning what she likes to play with (very soft, light and fluffy seems to be the key). My flat is dripping in tiny soft toys at the moment but I'm hoping I'll get the hang of what she likes and be able to give away the rest. :D

Well, I went through my share of harnesses before finding one that fit and worked well.

I have 2 leads. One flexi-lead and one 4' lead.

A dog bed that she never uses (though the cats enjoy it a lot!). Piper much prefers the sofa or my bed.

I have 3 Kongs, which I almost never use. Piper doesn't like Peanut Butter and I feed her raw, so no kibble to fill it with either. I know there are other things to stuff it with, but she just doesn't seem all that interested. (She's moderate to low on the food motivation scale.)

Toys - too many! :D She loves anything "tuggy" and I have an over-sized tennis ball (about the size of a soccer ball) that she absolutely adores playing with out in the back yard.

My training stuff - clicker, target stick, treat bag

And of course, Bully Sticks. They are scattered all over my house.

I struggled with what to do with Kongs also given that Ted is fed raw but recently I worked out how to use them when I leave him on his own and he now gets very excited when he sees the Kong come out even though it means I'm going out  What I do it stuff the tiny end with a bit of dried liver treat, trying to make it difficult to get out, then I get a pea sized about of liver cake and/or strong cheese and wipe it around as much of the inside with my finger as I can (I've also done the same successfully with a small blob of honey). It's almost no food but it's super smelly and he will quite happily spend half an hour trying to get every last bit out :D

Didn't know you sold products, gosh I'd be a nightmare!

I also have two water bowls and a travel water bowl, several old towels for drying him with and for him to eat on. And a box full of boxes, newpaper and toilet roll tubes etc :D Treat bags and tubs, 4 coats (all proper dog coats not those poncy things you usually see chis in), he wears a coat pretty much every time he goes out at the moment bless him or he shivers
Comb and brush, nail clippers

OMG I'm scaring myself ...

Clare, thanks for the tip about the Kong. Now cheese and liver are two things Piper will eat, and I like the idea of just putting enough of a smear to keep her occupied, but no so much to fill her up, so I think I'll give that a go one of these days. :D

Gosh, you guys are reminding me of more stuff I have for Piper like portable water bowl, crate, car seat belt, and on and on and

Poor Scout is beginning to sound like a pauper! She has her long lead, her short lead, her harness. A bag full of balls, her crate and her bed. I think that's it! A box with some toys (chewed) and some old towels from a charity shop. Plus a rain coat.

She is a sweety though! My OH gave her a new cat poop-scoop to bring in to me, and she thought it was for her, trotting around wagging her tail off and looking so happy to have a new 'toy'. Poor neglected thing

Her XL dog bed parked in front of our 68" TV. She likes to watch animal planet C=
