Hello,
On one episode of "It's Me Or The Dog", Victoria recommended feeding a substance that once processed through the digestive system, made dog poop taste awful to them and they would stop...you know. I don't want to be too disgusting here. Anyway, I've got a new puppy who keeps cleaning out my kitty litter boxes for me. And the, of course, her breath stinks. Can someone help me out here?
Sandy

The pineapple was used for the dog to stop eating his own poop. If you want your dog to stop eating cat poop, sorry you'll have to keep the litter box out of reach.

That's right Noobs - I've had cats and dogs and the only way to stop a dog from eating cat poop is to make sure the dog can't get to it.
I don't suggest you feed your cat pineapple, lol... was just answering the question as to what Victoria suggested to keep the dog from eating poop.
For the cat situation, she actually suggested a different type of cat box, that the dog wouldn't be able to get it's head into. This cat box http://www.petco.com/product/11197/Bood ... -Dove.aspx is like the one she suggested.

Pineapple didn't work with my dogs, they seemed to love the taste.

Nothing, I tried every product on the market, usually for 4 to 6 weeks to give them a chance to work, some made my dog worse not better. In the end I decided that it was stressing me far to much so I stopped bothering about it and started to tell my dogs to "Leave" when I saw them either going to eat or eating it, which they all did.
Once I was no longer stressed I found my dogs were much better, I do try and pick up as soon as I can but this can also make the problem worse, the dogs try to catch it as it is coming out, now that really is horrible.
They don't often eat it now because I watch them when they are out and give them the command to "Leave" it.

Thanks! I was just wondering if you had found anything to put in their food. I guess sometimes watching them is the best you can do, then clean it up asap. Thankfully my dog never tried to eat his poop
Have you tried to see if they are missing anything in their diet? Sometimes that can be a reason why dogs eat poop to get extra "nutrients".

I know why my dog first started to eat his and my other dogs poo, he taught 2 others to eat it as well.
Merlin was on antibiotics for nearly 2 months, he came with what looked like a cut in his tail, I took him to the vet and was told to change the dressing every other day and bath it. The day I took the bandage off there was part of the bone showing, the rest of it had gone, he was full of infection.
I rushed him to the vets who kept him in and took 6ins off his tail, he was put on a 2 week course of 2 different antibiotics. After the course he seemed fine, then the infection was back so another course of 2 different antibiotics for 3 weeks this time. Again when they had finished he seemed fine then the infection was back, so another course of the 2 strongest antibiotics my vets could get, he was on these for 4 weeks and the infection was gone.
Antibiotics kills off the microbes in their gut that helps break down the food, Merlin was eating the poo to put microbes back in, after this he never stopped eating poo.
Merlin was 26ins to the shoulder when he arrived, when the infection had gone he was now 28ins to the shoulder, he must have felt really ill with all that infection in him.

You can try giving him probiotics. For humans, there is something called Probiotic Acidophilus, usually comes in capsules but there is also a liquid form of it which you can add to the dog's food. I used to have some in the fridge and add it to my dog's food once in a while, just a teaspoon full.Mattie wrote: Antibiotics kills off the microbes in their gut that helps break down the food, Merlin was eating the poo to put microbes back in, after this he never stopped eating poo.

Bio yoghurt also helps but dogs still feel the need to get it more naturally, yuk.

Green Tripe is the best source for dogs, its full of loverly bacteria that aids digestion. As for a dog eating out the cat's litter tray, keep it out of reach/empty it more often?
