Re: New Litter of Positive Alaskan Sled Dog Puppies

Terra (formerly Nilas) and Griffin (formerly Jumble) are preparing for their grand flight to their forever home in Minnesota. Trish met me at the airport as I got off the crew-change flight from work, and we dashed off to our vet's clinic for their identification microchips and health certificates. ...

You mean you have space in a freezer for people food? WOW!!! That's an amazing concept.

Our freezer contains both only because we sometimes eat the same things we give to the dogs to supplement their normal diet. Canine or primate - moose or salmon does a body good.

Re: New Litter of Positive Alaskan Sled Dog Puppies

While I'm here at work, Trish and the puppies had a big day yesterday. With Nita's help, all were weighed and dewormed, and Terra and Griffin got their first vaccinations (they are flying with us to Minnesota on Saturday next). Nita got some nice photos to share as well. Griffin (formerly Jumble) is...

Re: What are you and your dogs up to today? Part 2

MPBandmom, that was the first run of the season for that team of dogs and was only a total of 1.25 miles. It's barely enough for them to get some adrenalin going and then use it up. The four-wheeler is used while their isn't enough snow to safely run a sled (some mushers do use snowmachines for earl...

Re: New Litter of Positive Alaskan Sled Dog Puppies

We are starting to sort out which puppies are going to go to which homes. The owner of the sire (Linda Newman, owner of Points Unknown touring kennel) graciously let me have pick of the females. I've chosen Aufeis and she was practically doing the happy dance as she has preferred Nilas the entire ti...

Re: What are you and your dogs up to today? Part 2

The big/small training is indeed impressive. I know a fair number of dog mushers who train their leaders to discern 'little' from 'big' changes in direction. For example, in an open field or crossing an ice-covered lake they can cue a "little haw" or "little gee" to make small co...

Re: Trouble with pup not listening when excited

Like humans, an excited dog has a big surge of adrenalin (epinephrine) along with other hormones very similar to those released when experiencing fear. The adrenalin blocks communication across the portion of the brain that allows the two hemispheres of the brain to communicate. As a practical matte...

Re: New Litter of Positive Alaskan Sled Dog Puppies

I haven't found the hammer yet. I doubt I will find it until breakup. It wasn't my brightest moment. I've started feeding the puppies outside the hutch (I like that word) to encourage them to be a bit more mobile and to practice on the steps leading to the doorway. A lot of dogs seem to have ...

Re: Kennel cough and exercise

The many viruses that cause kennel cough in dogs are similar to the many viruses that cause cold or flu-like symptoms in humans. Contracting kennel cough does not represent a vaccination failure, it is a case of the dog contracting a virus that the vaccine does not cover. Think about the things you ...

Re: Paws - between the pads infected?

Is Gold Bond foot powder available in Finland? It works well on both dogs and humans. Consequently it's very popular among Alaskan dog mushers.

Re: New Litter of Positive Alaskan Sled Dog Puppies

Trish and I changed out the straw in the whelping pen today. The only challenge was that the top was frozen in (condensation from puppy breath). I needed to bang on it with a hammer to loosen it up. Since the babies are still weeks away from their first fear imprint period, we moved Chetan out of th...

Our little guy Friday is quite opinionated, and willing to voice it. He is a really good singer, too. Here is a video we shot today.
