Re: Vent!
Hang in there, Erica. You know you can always come here for encouragement and support. Well I have my own vent. Our clothes dryer has been inoperable since December. We've had a technician out four times now. We've had the heating element replaced, and control board, and today we were told we need t...

Re: What are you and your dogs up to today? Part 2
Hi Erica. Yeah, I'm quite well versed about staph and strep and antibiotic resistance. I definitely don't want to be deliberately breeding. The NP instructed me to take it for "seven days, but if the swelling has not gone, then continue for ten days." The hives appeared on the seven...

Re: Off leash
Adding to what Judy and Nettle just said, in the US, and especially in my region, I must consider other dangers, such as coyotes, cougars, and venomous snakes. A bit farther north we have to consider bears, and even wolves! And skunks. They look cute, but the consequences of your dog intersecting wi...

Re: What are you and your dogs up to today? Part 2
Well my cellulitis seems to be clearing up nicely, though the dermatitis itself shows no signs of leaving. I am currently covered in hives on top of the eczema! I suspect the antibiotic, so I've stopped taking it. Meanwhile, yesterday we had a nice break from the yucky weather, so I took the girls o...

Ah, poor Watson. Just take it easy and try not to think about your surgery. Both the UK and the U.S. have some of the most gifted surgeons in the world. Is it same day or will you stay overnight? Will it be laparoscopic or open abdomen?

Re: Off leash
You mean when hiking out in the wilderness and no one else is around, no cars, no bicycles, no other dogs? Sure. I let Annie off all the time. She can keep up at her own pace, stopping to smell things here and there. She stays close by-- within 50 meters or so, has excellent recall, and does not bot...

Re: Recall
The recall word you currently use has likely been ruined, so you will need to find a new one. It can be any word, even something silly and made up like gobbledygook, but there are some rules about how to use it, and you can learn that here. :) Before you go trying out long lines, you need to start i...

Re: What are you and your dogs up to today? Part 2
Today we had a tiny human (18 months old and mobile) over to visit. He lives with two working border collies, and he is being taught to be gentle with the dogs and to never grab, pull, or sit on them. Anyway, Annie and Dottie were great. We warned our guests before they came that Dottie is nervous a...

Re: weimaraner?
The possibilities are endless, and there are a lot of ideas on the EXERCISE THE MIND thread in the health, diet, exercise section. Gun dogs tend to be good at agility, but they really enjoy eventing games like "find it" and working scent trails. Gun dogs can also be trained for search and ...

Re: weimaraner?
Having been brought up with weimaraners your whole life does count for something though. The question is, what do you plan to do with your dog, be it gsd or weim? As you know, weimaraners are gun dogs, bred to hunt upland game. Did your father hunt his dogs? Did you go with him ever? And how were hi...

Re: Vent!
Judy for those awkward places, I would make a poultice. Mix the cinnamon with water to form a paste, spread thinly on the area, then cover with a warm damp towel, covered again by a dry towel to keep the moist heat in, and relax for 20 minutes, then rinse and apply a thick moisturizing cream. My der...

Re: Help! Mystery skin condition, even vet is stumped. *Diagnosis: Lupus.
There are herbs and other alternative treatments for managing lupus that could help improve quality of life without all the negative side effects. Massage, acupressure, hydrotherapy, etc. A canine rheumatologist, if there is one in the area, could help immensely.

Re: How to help my reactive, anxious dog when I have a broken leg
Go have a look at the EXERCISE THE MIND thread in the health, diet, exercise section. There are a lot of great ideas for indoor activities, stuff you can do in the backyard, stuff people who aren't feeling 100 percent can do and still satisfy the dog. One idea, for example, is setting up a makeshift...

Re: Loose leash walking
I agree with Carrie about the fiance. He sounds like an abuser, and is likely to be abusive to your sister and any children they have. I can just see him smacking an infant for crying in what he thinks is a "defiant" tone of voice.

Nettle, that's a capital idea, and in fact the dandelions are just popping up. :) We have milk whistle too, but it isn't in bloom just yet. Burdick is another good cleansing herb. In fact, my veterinarian has a formula I can order from him. I think I will do that as soon as I finish my Sun therapy (...
