Re: So close, yet so far. Potty training

Yeah baby gate is a no go. (my family is still of the school of "grind his nose in it" so any inconvenience to them is just proof that positive training is a failure.) As far as tying him to me, I tried that but he just backs as far to the end as he can and then chews on the leash/harness ...

Re: So close, yet so far. Potty training

Things I've observed: As far as the downstairs spot we have a fairly open floor plan. short of keeping him crated it would not be possible to keep him away from this area.(there really aren't any choke points to gate) We have removed the rug from this area but he still pees where the rug used to be....

Re: So close, yet so far. Potty training

So Bax STILL hasn't stopped peeing in the house. I take him out at LEAST every 1-2hrs and I've had him pee in the house less than half an hr after he's come back in. He still pees at least once every time i take him out. he had a nice 7 day spread without peeing in the house and then he had an accid...

Re: Raw feeding... but high grain?

Since we live 50 miles from where we do our shopping, we will just have to ride this out.
Ow.... my condolences

Yeah I'd definitely have to do more homework before I switched I just was curious if it was possible at all.

Raw feeding... but high grain?

I'd say this is a question for my vet but frankly I don't trust him. That being said I do have a question about raw feeding. I've noticed alot of you chose to feed raw and while this isn't an option for me and Bax right now it is something I'm looking in to for the future. My question is this: Bax i...

Re: What are you and your dogs up to today? Part 2

Bax had a fantastic walk down by the creek. the water is super cold though so i don't think he enjoyed it as much as he could have. Worked on trying to get him through the tunnel for agility class. still no dice =( he REALLY doesn't like that thing.

Re: welfare in dog training link

Thank you so much. I made the mistake of reading the comments for this https://www.reddit.com/r/gifs/comments/ ... _dare_you/ and it made me cry =( I wanted to say something but I'm never sure if I'm educated enough to not set us all back by being an idiot.

Re: Vent!

My sister has a chihuahua and she was warned when she got him that he would need lots of exercise because bad back legs run in his family. She kept him locked in her room and never walks him. When she realized that he could no longer hop out onto the roof to go potty she put a box there for him to j...

Heyo!

So, I've posted a couple of times but I hadn't seen this here so I figured it couldn't hurt to introduce myself. I'm Bax's furmum. Bax is a rat terrier, he'll be 2 in january. He had a bit of a rough start and grew up very isolated so he has his socialization issues. Thankfully we've worked through ...

Re: What are you and your dogs up to today? Part 2

Had a fantastic day with Bax today and its a bit of a long story. He's terrified of enclosed or moving spaces. Hates cars, never was crate trained because he was to scared. Still, he's super high energy and loves to jump (almost 2 yr old rat terrier that's high energy and loves to jump, whoda thunk?...

Re: Defending stolen food and toileting indoors

Bax has never snapped at me but he has jaws of steel and runs away when i come close and he has something. Or at least he did. We worked on the trading and he now steals things (usually paper cups from the bathroom garbage) to bring to me for a treat. I'm usually in a hurry and (embarrassingly) rare...

Re: Puppy Terrified of Vet... Getting Her spayed

Dittoing the happy vet visits. Bax used to be terrified of people and anywhere that wasn't our house but I took him once a week to the vets just to socialize. the techs there were super friendly and very receptive when i asked them to toss treats as they walked by. (makes sense, they must like dogs ...

Re: Prey drive failure

Thanks JudyN. I think I've mentioned before that I'm very new to positive dog training. I was raised with the whole alpha rolls/ choke collars mentality. I'm really happy doing positive training but I'm always acutely aware of just how little i know. I want to do right by Bax but I don't always feel...

Re: Prey drive failure

Thanks nettle for your input. we live in the country, even if i know the chickens are locked up there are still woodchucks and rabbits and mice, would you recommend just never ever letting him off leash or could he if just the chickens were locked up? I have in the past been able to call him off mid...

Prey drive failure

So despite my best efforts to keep them separated while I trained Bax (1.5 year old rat terrier) to ignore the chickens he managed to snag a chicken yesterday. I'm still kind of in shock. he didn't kill it but i'm confident that if i hadn't gotten him off her he would have. he was just figuring out ...
